WTF moments in gaming

Post by alexis524 »

Hi, did a search that only revealed WTF moments in SNES/SFC gaming, but not in general. I was recently playing God of War 3 and i did something so WTF' ery, that i had to post it. I just bought it yesterday, and as i was about 30 minutes or so into the game, and got to the part where Hades has trapped the guy (sorry can't remember his name) in brambles, and he asks you to free him so he can help you. This was the first real puzzle, and i must have spent at least 45 minutes trying everything in my power to progress, but not light the bramble on fire, since he said it would kill him. Well, after figuring the puzzle out, i sat back and said, WTF? this is effing Kratos, he helps no one. why would he spare anyone's life??? I should have know to set him on fire from the get go. It was by far my biggest WTF moment...

I think my very first WTF moment in video game history happened in Super Mario Bros. when I went to save the princess, but instead ended up saving Toad's sorry ass. He then had the balls to say to me "Thank you, Mario! But our princess is in another castle!" That was the first time that was really like... WTF!? And I honestly wanted to beat him down. lol

My favorite WTF moment was the battle against Psycho Mantis in the playstation release of Metal Gear Solid. That scene broke down the 4th wall as Psycho Mantis addressed me as the player, not as Snake the character. He knew that I had also been playing Castlevania: Symphony of the Night recently and he knew how much time I had spent playing MGS. It took me a minute to realize that he was figuring this info out by accessing my memory cards, but it weirded me out for moment. I was really shocked and I realized that I was going to have to do something really unusual to beat him. I tried a bunch of things: I turned off the power and that didn't do it. I think I (embarassingly) might have even tried talking to the screen. Eventually I figured out the trick that you have to use the 2nd player controller to defeat him. That was a big WTF moment because the game played head tricks on me and got me to do some stupid things. Definitely one of my top 10 most memorable boss battles.

I remember the first time I saw a Mortal Kombat fatality too. I was so disturbed.

I was in an arcade with my buddy. They had just brought in new arcade machines for Samurai Shodown and Mortal Kombat, both new releases at the time. I had played a round of Mortal Kombat and didn't like the controls because I couldn't get used to using a button to block after the many hours I had spent playing Street Fighter II. I left MK and got to playing Samurai Shodown, which I thought was really cool because you had weapons, which had not been done in a fighting game before.

While I was playing a match my friend ran across the arcade and grabbed me. His eyes were buggin out of his head and he was stammering "DUDE! DUDE! Holy CRAP! This guy... we were playing that Mortal Kombat game.. and then... and then.. like he pushed some buttons and I was Raiden and I lost and he RIPPED MY FREAKING HEART OUT WITH HIS BARE HANDS! HOLY CRAP! You have to see this! Come watch this guy play." I wanted to finish my Samurai Shodown match, but my friend dragged me by the arm and was incredibly excited. Everyone was gathered around this guy at the arcade. Now he was playing as Raiden and kicking serious butt. The words rang out "FINISH HIM". Then tap tap tap on the controller and buttons. Suddenly, the sky became dark. Bolts of lightning launched out of Raiden's fingers into Johnny Cage's face and KERPLOW! His head exploded into little bloody chunks. Every kid in the arcade roared with applause and did a collective "OOOOOOHHHH SHIIIIIT" I felt a little sick having never seen such violence in a game before, but agreed it was indeed awesome.

The bat family in Brutal Legend. If you've played it, you know what I mean. Hilarious

Um, pretty much EVERYTHING in Katamari Damacy

Incest in Viva Pinata

Fighting an entire gym building in Three Dirty Dwarves

Puppy tossing in Earthworm Jim 2....and pretty much everything else in the EWJ games

Seeing Michael Jackson in Space Channel 5

Fighting Batman and Spiderman in Revenge of Shinobi

More moments than I can even remember in Eternal Darkness. Has any game ever handled insanity so well? Or did such a great job messing with YOU the player, not your onscreen avatar

Seeing Dante in Shin Mega Tensei: Nocturne. Seriously, what the hell was that all about?

Conker talking to the game designer in Bad Fur Day or seeing two enemies have a civilized conversation in one scene and spotting you and saying, "Oh crap! There he is! Get back into character"

Characters discussing their levels in Disgaea 2. Seeing Etna flip out about being reduced to a level 1 character is one of the funniest things I've ever seen in a game

The Silent Hill series is full of these moments. "You.. you see it too? For me, it's always like this." "They look like monsters to you?"
I have a ton of games listed at my store's site: Super Smash Video Games
