Exactly. You can finish a game by reaching the end, but you didn't beat it. With a lot of shmups if you continue it considerably changes the game because it throws the rank out of whack. There's nothing wrong with continuing, otherwise barely anyone would even see the end of the game. but there is a big difference between getting to the end and beating it.Gamerforlife wrote:I think that this is especially true for home ports that provide you a set nuYou guys are comparing shmups to other genres that have different goals than most shmups do.

So what do you see as the difference between finishing, beating, mastering, and completing?t0yrobo wrote:Exactly. You can finish a game by reaching the end, but you didn't beat it. I don't want to fret over semantics too much because it's really not something that can be applied to other genres very well. For this conversation I'd considering 'finishing' reaching the end. Beating would be finishing in the game within whatever limits are set by the game. You've literally beat the game at what it does.dsheinem wrote:So what do you see as the difference between finishing, beating, mastering, and completing?
I supposed if you've mastered it you've pretty much made it your bitch. I dunno about completing, I don't think it really applies here beyond just being a synonym for either beating or finishing.

What a clusterfuck of a post.
To the op, if you feel you have finished it, you most likely have.

Re: when have you beaten a shmup
I realize my typo in the title (my lack of English skills reveal themselves once again)
I guess this is a topic that can be discussed for a long time
thing is just I've played through about 9 SHMUP's in a week, but I don't feel as I've actually "beaten" them
I see however that there are too many definitions that I've missed out on
I'll just stick to having "played through" the games
I will feel as if though I've beaten them, once I've gotten a first-place
for now I am still in "practice" mode concerning this genre, hence I wanted some input

C-64 will never die
- only the players

Re: when have you beaten a shmup
When I 1cc'ed Metal Slug 2, I didn't consider it me 'beating' Metal Slug 2. I had beaten it a long time ago. The game was obviously designed to eat through my quarters, anyone could see that.
When I 1cc'ed it, I was 'beating' the competition. I was guaranteeing that I'd have the highest score on the leaderboard. I only did it because everytime you die in Metal Slug, you lose all the hostages that you had rescued - which is a huge chunk of points. By keeping all those points 'til the very end, I was making sure it was my score that was going to be mocking every other playing that went to that arcade.
That's how I see it. 1cc'ing isn't beating the game, it's beating the community.
