if "everybody" knows that Shmups should only be played with 1CC being the goal, then why are there so many disagreeing posts in this thread?Gamerforlife wrote:
It's not about authority, everyone knows that arcade games get dumbed down for consoles. And everybody knows that designers have to make games accessible for them to sell
I'm not claiming to be an authority on anything, everything I've said is just my opinion
when have you beaten a shmup

This is how just how I think
If you saw the topic about brainhex categories I fall into the Achiever class(with Mastermind a very close second). So take that for what it's worth

Well there will always be people who disagree with anything. I'm sure some people think the earth is flat. What's your point?noiseredux wrote:if "everybody" knows that Shmups should only be played with 1CC being the goal, then why are there so many disagreeing posts in this thread?Gamerforlife wrote:

Re: when have you beaten a shmup
The original question is directed towards shmups. Other genres are irrelevent in this case.
Once that countdown screen comes up, you lost. You can choose to insert coin and continue through the end, completing the game, but you didn't truly beat it.
Continuing (besides filling arcade cabs with quarters) should be used to practice the game.
It's stressful and maddening and painful and a little sadistic... but it's beautiful and the payoff feels fucking great.
If you don't already play this way, well, you should.

All of the above! I'd also add that beating the game with all the available ships as criteria for me as well, especially in games like Deathsmiles that have stories for each ship/character.

I get it, just because I said "the way the games should be played" you're saying I'm trying to pass myself off as an authority. Well, that's just silly. You said in a previous post, "It's extra goals if someone beats the games but is looking for further challenge." and I didn't accuse you of trying to be an authority on what "extra goals" are.noiseredux wrote:never mind.Gamerforlife wrote: Well there will always be people who disagree with anything. OF COURSE everything we say in this thread is our opinion. No one's an authority on anything

actually it's more that you're saying things like "everybody knows that..." that makes it seem to me that you're not stating an opinion. Or rather, you can't even see anyone else's opinion as valid or within the realm of possibility. You're making definitive statements and then saying they're opinions. That's fine, I know that they are opinions... they're just not really worded that way. Haha.

Yeah well, that's why I usually try and and throw in "just my opinion" or something to that effect after I make an argument. I don't view my opinions as any more right than anybody else's but when I get really into a debate I may come off that way.noiseredux wrote:actually it's more that you're saying things like "everybody knows that..." that makes it seem to me that you're not stating an opinion. I respect your opinion and everyone else's on this forum, but that doesn't mean I won't try and argue with you if I don't agree with it
