Niode, are you sure about this? I think the drive can read DDs (720k), but not HDs (1.4 M). I think all 3.5'' floppies are at least DD (compared to 5.25'' ones).

Anyway as long as we are both talking 3.5'' 720k floppies there is no ambiguity.

Ivo.
Oh yes of course. That's what I meant. Sorry, got my archaic storage methods confused. Forgive me :)

I think I'm going to test my luck, and look for a reasonably-priced CD32 with a keyboard adapter, since all my blank floppy discs are High-Density format.

You really don't need the keyboard for most games.

it is my opinion that WHDLoad is the best choice out there in order to play new/old games on your Amiga

I'd recommend an A1200 with a HD, since a HD would be necessary in order to play these games

WHDLoad costs a minor sum of money (it cost me €10) to register and then you can download every WHDLoad game out there and just run it off of your HD

http://www.whdload.de/

here is King Gorilla's WHDLoad pack with numerous games:

http://kg.whdownload.com/kgwhd/

if you then can get a hold of all the kickstart versions, you are able to play just about any game out there, ranging from KS1.2-3.1

it is a rather simple procedure once you get into it and although I am emulating, I can still play all my old favorites, as well as the "new" ones without any problems

I'm not sure what the CD32 can/can not play, but as far as I recall it is KS3.1 and thus may have problems with 1.3 games, etc.

please correct me if I'm wrong

You can install games to the hard disk without having to pay for whdload. I'm not 100% sure what that does, but when I feel like playing Monkey Island with my Roland MT32 I install the game to my amiga hard drive so I don't have to keep swapping disks all the time.

unregistered WHDLoad gives you a "nag-screen" and some games won't work (Moonstone comes to mind)

apart from that it's fully functional

and the great part about WHDLoad is that it allows you to install games, which were not made for HD even if they only took up one disk it's still handier to have the HD version

since the HD wasn't as... "popular" in the Amiga days, most games (AFAIK) weren't HD compatible, which is why WHDLoad kicks ass

some examples would be:

Alien Breed 2 on HD
Dragon Wars on HD
Monkey Island 1 on HD
Cannon Fodder on HD
Worms on HD
Super Skidmarks/Skidmarks 2 on HD
etc.

it's very, very convenient and you can even install CD32 games with WHDLoad (there are tons of configuration files available for WHDLoad, which is why I chose to pay for it)

sorry if I'm coming of as an ad. and if you knew all this already, just pointing out to others who might be interested

I'm saying that you don't need WHDload to install games to your hard drive. I haven't come across a game that I haven't been able to run from the HDD yet...

weird... then again I've not a Amiga with HD to try it out on... but I kind of fail to see the use of WHDLoad in that case

thanks for pointing it out and sorry for being persistent, I was just under the impression that ordinary games, not made for HD were not installable

I haven't used my Amiga with the HDD for a couple of years now, I don't have it here with me to check either unfortunately.

I also am under the impression that the majority of old floppy games are not installable to HD without some kind of trickery. Maybe WHDLoad isn't the only way to do it though, but I really thought that just moving the stuff into the HD won't work.
