Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time - Granted most of the major cast are white folks and we guessed roughly half the dialogue before it was said, this film was actually a lot better than I expected. The action sequences were entertaining, and the movie did a good job of staying true to the recent run of games, down to how the games handled the camera to draw players attention to specific places. It's not exactly Academy Award material, but there are far, far worse video game films out there. Like Double Dragon. Or Street Fighter.

Feast III- the lastest movie in the Feast series- I have a tremendous bias towards these films- i love the gore, i love the acting, i love the jokes- yes its cheesy and campy- but if you want a decent horror movie that will give you a few laughs- look no further

The month-o-horror movies commences!
Freaks (1932) - This is a film I have been meaning to see for a long time, and seemed like an appropriate pick to kick off a month focused on horror films. In truth, aside from the last 5 minutes there was really little to nothing in the film that came across as horrific/frightening, but the cast itself is bizarre and unforgettable. It was worth watching as a historical artifact and canonical horror film, but I truthfully didn’t get much from the plot, directing, etc. In reading about it afterwards, it sounds like the most controversial and frightening elements were removed. It’d be great to see the full version some day and re-evaluate, but alas those parts are supposedly gone forever.
Grade: 2/5
Bubba Ho-Tep (2002) – I like Bruce Campbell as much as the next guy, and this film has him doing the horror/humor bit that we’ve all come to love. The film gets high marks for concept, but low marks for execution. The idea of Elivs and JFK (whose mind is implanted into a black man) working together in their old age in an East Texas retirement home to fight an evil Egyptian mummy who sucks souls through assholes is a great pitch, and the opportunities for smart writing abound. Unfortunately, the writing isn’t as sharp as I’d hoped, the direction is bland, the plot plodding, and the overall feel of the film is one of unfulfilled promise, despite some great performances from the cast.
Grade: 2.5/5
The Descent (2005) – This was another new one for me – I am trying to make it a point this October to mostly watch horror films that I haven’t seen previously. Several things stood out about this one. I thought the all female cast was a fairly unique touch (especially for a higher quality horror film), that the lighting added a lot to the atmosphere, and that the claustrophobic shooting did much to convey a sense of isolation and fear. The scares were visceral and the gory scenes were apropos to the plot (they didn’t usually seem excessive or “gore for the sake of gore”). The pacing was just a little off (especially in the first half) for my tastes, and the acting itself left a good deal to be desired. Still, a fun horror film that fans of the genre should certainly check out.
Grade: 3.5/5

Just saw The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo... excellent. Wasn't a pleasant movie to watch, given the fairly disturbing events/characters within, but it was a damn good movie.

Just watched Men behind the Sun- exploitation- horrors of war- really messed up- same vain as cannibal holocaust
two scenes in particular- actual autopsy of a kid and a scene where they throw a cat into a pit of rats and it gets torn up
other than these two scenes- there is actually some substance, a story about a group of boys being trained by the Japanese military to conduct horrific experiments against the Chinese. A very overlooked part of the war. I really enjoyed this film and I recommend it to those who enjoy
history

only issues, the dvd netflix sent (i think the only region 1 dvd) only has a dubbed version and a mandarin- no subtitle options
