when have you beaten a shmup

when have you actually "beaten" a shmup?

what are the criteria?

are there any? or is it up to each and one personally?

thoughts?

although I've blazed through about 7 shmup's this week, I've yet to land any decent high-score, which in my opinion would be the criteria

Can you really even beat a shmup? Well I guess when you beat all the missions you could say you beat it but, shmups are all about scores not levels. Like a puzzle game such as Tetris, you can master a shmup beat never really beat it. Thats my take on it at least. People play shmups for different reasons.

I usually play just to finish all the missions (or beat the last boss). I play them a ton, but I still consider myself a shmup n00b. Occasionally I will play for high score depending on the game (don pachi!).

For me, I've beaten a game when I've made it from the beginning to the end. Anything other than that is just extra credit.

This, I think for SCHMUPS / Arcade games, if you have beaten them with there default amount of lives / continues then you can add it to the finished pile.

I also consider simply getting to the end beating the game.

This, if it has multiple loops etc it gets a little more complicated. but I'd consider a 1st loop 1cc beating the game, the rest is just gravy.

I disagree with some of the responses here. When it comes to beat'em ups, shmups and any other genre with roots in the arcade, you haven't truly beaten it until you can 1cc it. It's okay to say you've beaten a game to get across the idea that you've seen every level. I do that sometimes, but I'll usually add that I didn't 1cc it. Until you can do that, you haven't REALLY beaten it. If you can't 1cc a shmup or arcade style beat'em up than you haven't really played it. You've learned nothing of the game's true depth and you haven't really developed any genuine skill

I'm not knocking anyone who simply wants to credit feed through an arcade game and just see everything there is to see, but I think when one says they've beaten something, it should imply that they reached a reasonable level of skill at the game. Credit feeding through a game doesn't require skill
