Explaining the appeal of the black dreamcast

Post by StevieC »

I think the allure of the black dreamcast is like the difference between a glossy white fighter jet (Thunderbirds F-16) and a matte black spyjet (SR-71 Blackbird). Sometimes it pays to be an aviation buff.

With some risk you can go for a PAL saturn. With a soldering iron and steady hand you can fix it so it does 60Hz and all regions. The region switch is fairly safe to do but the 60Hz mod requires you to "bend up" the leg of an IC or by some means, gain access to it.

If you get a JAP or US saturn you could thankfully skip the 60Hz mod but the region switch would still be interesting.

The second tricky part is figuring out which revision saturn you have. The region jumpers are spread out all over the board and changes location on different revisions. If I remember correctly I could locate mine by looking on the "HiSaturn Navi" shots here -> http://www.gamesx.com/wiki/doku.php?id= ... ega_saturn.
I have a PAL unit so that wiki page can't be entirely complete or accurate.

PAL units are cheap so if you fail you can get another one ;)
