Upon further investigation the iPad and the iPhone 4 both use the same A4 System on a Chip. Which means it has the same PowerVR graphics chip on die. The only reason I can come up with for the discrepancy between performance is most likely down to developer bias/apathy (there's waaaay more iPhones out there than iPads) and the iPads higher resolution of 1024 x 768 compared to the iPhone 4's 960 x 640 display. More pixels = more power required to drive them.
I still can't understand the point of the iPad. I absolutely fail to see a use for it. It's not a gaming machine, it's not a laptop, you can only run app store apps on it so can't use it for creating music (unless you want to frustrate yourself to tears through tedium using one of the overpriced 'audio production' apps on it). Browsing the internet on the go? Well I can already do that quite comfortably on my iPhone 4 (and my 3G before it). What's the point?
Had Apple had the damn thing running OS X it would have been a day 1 purchase for me simply because I could have used it as an extra (multi-touch) interface for Logic Pro (thanks to wonderful environment window) or created Max/MSP patches on it. Without that, it is utterly pointless.
As far as performance is concerned the ipod touch 3G is pretty close to the 4g and ipad as well. It has the same ram/gpu but a slower cpu. With the extra resolution on screen the 4g uses a lot of the extra cpu to keep up performance.
Of course things will look much better on 4g or ipad due to the much nicer resolution. I haven't experienced it but I bet the gyroscope is a lot nicer than the accelerometer too.
It was a tough call on my new touch purchase since I could have spent an extra $20-30 and had an 8GB 4g instead of the 32GB 3g. I'm still not sure I made the right choice.
I still have to say that I enjoy gaming on the ipod though. There are a few fps games that translate quite nicely even with the different control scheme. There is an attachment in the works to add button controls as well. I hope they put a rechargeable battery in it for extended play too.

In no way is the iPad a replacement for a netbook.
i understand that netbooks are more powerful and capable than an ipad
but the truth that i discovered is that
over 70% of people, they buy laptops just to browse the intenet, go to youtube, use email, and IM.
Other than that they very rarely use Office or other software.
Ipad is more than good for the purposes i mentioned above, most people over pay , or under use their laptop's/netbook power

True, and on the plus side, the iPad lasts much longer than a netbook on battery power. (at least in my experience)
