Super Scope 6 not working D:

Post by tsunamikitsune »

Lately I've been finding some awesome stuff thanks to Goodwill and their weekly silent auctions, in which they almost always have some video game related items. The first week I checked it out, I got a Game Gear (with AC and carrying case) and four games (Sonic 2, Power Rangers, Lion King, and some baseball game) for $35. The second week, they had two DSes (a Lite and a DSi) along with New Super Mario Bros and Mario Kart DS all in one lot (which only went for $70 or so, but don't really need more DSes, lol). The third week, I scored three Gameboys (two classic, one Color), and four games (Donkey Kong Country, Dr. Mario, Tetris, and a boxed copy of Zelda: Oracle of Ages) for about $40.

Upon picking up my Gameboys last week, my jaw dropped when I saw a Super Scope 6 up for a starting bid of $15. I'm sure no one else would really care, but I've had a special longing for one for years. You see, when I was younger, my mom bought me Yoshi's Safari for the Super Nintendo, but neglected to read the box and procure the light gun needed to play it. So, being the sad child I was, I sat and watched the demo screen pass me by for hours until I threw the cart in the closet.

But now, I have it! I have the Super Scope I wanted for so long! But it's not working! It's not working on my precious Yoshi's Safari!

So yeah, anyone have any idea what the problem could be? I don't get any sign of it working (buttons do nothing, no cursor on screen, etc) even though I put new batteries in it, turned the power on, and plugged the sensor in port 2 on my system.

I've noticed the metal springs that touch the batteries are a bit corroded; could that be the issue? Do I need the Super Scope 6 cart to calibrate or something? If neither of these sound like problems, is there be anything else I could do?

Please don't let my dreams of playing Yoshi's Safari escape me again. D:

If the springs you can see are corroded try cleaning them. Though if those are corroded, the ones way down in it you can't see are probably corroded as well. It can probably be fixed, but you'll need to take it apart to do so.

Are you playing the game on an HD or similar 'modern' television? Super Scope games, and all light games for that matter, will NOT work on newer TVs.. (I've heard placing saran wrap around the screen works, but I've never actually tried it myself.)

You're best bet is to find a good ol' CRT television or old school Zenith and 'Play It Loud' like it's 1993..

Derp, I came to say that and to make sure it's plugged in #2, then read it was in #2 and forgot the rest. Saran wrap will not help because LCD and Plasma TVs don't draw the picture by scanning, which is how old style lightguns work and even if it is a tube HD TV the extra lines of resolution will likely cause issues.

Yeah, I forgot to add that I am using an old CRT TV for this purpose. Gotta keep it around for the light gun games. :D

The springs being corroded might be the cause, then? I'm not afraid to open it up and clean it out, I just want to make sure it's actually a possible cause for concern before I take the time to do it. I know that it may not work even if I clean them, but if my best shot is cleaning them, I'll go for it.

Good to know, since I've been wondering about the saran-wrap theory myself.. Now I know not to try it out, and save myself the embarrassment of explaining to my girlfriend why the plastic wrap's all gone...

When I first got my Super Scope, it wasn't working. I checked the visible battery terminals but there was no corrosion. I opening it up and found out that the battery terminals that were not visible had massive corrosion. On top of that, the corrosion ate threw one of the wire. Long story short, I cleaned them up and resoldered the wire and then it was working perfectly.

You should open it up and get a look at the battery terminals that are not visible.

"Why the hell is the TV wrapped up in cling wrap"

"Uhh, it was John, he was over and pranked me while I was in the bathroom. Glad I wasn't in there long or he might have wrapped the couch too!"

Cracked it open, cleaned the contacts, and now it works! Finally I got to play Yoshi's Safari and it was just as awesome as I always thought it would be. Tin Star is also a lot more fun using the Super Scope than the controller.

Thanks for the advice, guys.
