Yeah, that elevator music style jazz actually worked well in this game. Weird, but awesome!

I think Elevator Action Returns is one of those games that the word cool was invented for. It just oozes style, like a good Cowboy Bebop episode. Weird analogy, I know

No, not weird at all! I totally get the Cowboy Bebop vibe, not in story or anything, but it has that same feel.

At the risk of jinxing myself, I actually managed to find a good deal on the Saturn version. It should arrive sometime before the weekend. Damaged discs and lost mail aside, I might be able to cross this decade+ long search off my list.

Edit: Well what do you know? It came in today. I really wasn't expecting it until tomorrow or Saturday. Fantastic port. Much more playable than the Taito Classics version. Now that the unpredictable slowdown is gone, the game is actually a little easier!

I got to play a pretty intense 2 player game at the meet up yesterday. Multiplayer is what puts this game miles above the other ports. I didn't notice any slow down - even with extreme gunplay, several enemies on screen at the same time and pyrotechnics from grenades and traps. This would have brought the PS2 version to its knees.

Another interesting discovery was that Jad and Kart compliment each other very well in coop. Jad does a great job of backing up Kart while Kart is able to maneuver easier to accomplish objectives. Kart may be an easier target to hit (he doesn't duck well under bullets), but Jad's extended life bar actually allows him to work as a shield in certain situations. We were breezing through some of the more difficult sections when we started using these tactics. Edie is still a one woman army, however. But she does not compliment the other two very well. We found that whoever was using Edie would leave the other player behind or would actually somehow end up responsible for their death.
