What is the best advice someone has given you?

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

I have learned silence from the talkative,
toleration from the intolerant,
and kindness from the unkind;
yet, strange, I am ungrateful to those teachers.

I love those last two.
I feel old when talking to anyone my age yet too inexperienced to effectively talk to anyone older. Life is grand that way.

Be polite. Be efficient. Have a plan to kill everyone you meet.

Yeah, the Jack Fyock one made me smile and the Kahlil Gibran one I think places every negative experience we have in perspective. It's all a tool for our learning

That's funny, because one of my friends hates that quote and decided to post his opinion on Facebook today. :P

"The Ticonderoga is the Cadillac of pencils."
--My cross-country coach/Algebra II teacher.

It's true, the Ticonderoga is the best pencil that is essentially affordable to the public but it's not as affordable as everything else. :)

My Navy recruiter:

"When you're in Singapore you double wrap that shit, son".

...I never tested the advice but it seemed pretty damn sound.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

So far these two people have said wiser words to me:

1. My old boss at my old job and I were talking while doing a valet in UNC Chapel Hill and he I made a comment at that time how I didnt have the brains to be in that school, and told me "Never doubt yourself". Those are words I will bring with me forever.

2. I was talking to a doctor who was well over in Texas over the phone at my job, and we were chatting about life and what not and stated "Everyone has a dream they want to achieve, but only 97 precent of them never get to that point to achieve their dream" (It was something like that, but that sounds about right). This came from a man who was an orphan who became a doctor to being a very well off and humble man from the way he described himself. Among the jackholes and buttwhipes i meet at my job, i get very few here and there who are very interesting people to talk to.

My grandfather always said "Drink water till you pee water" since your body has built in metrics for how dehydrated you are. He believed that most disease could be controlled if you were hydrated, and in his 60 years of practice it proved true. Hell I never saw him sick until his final days.

Oddly enough another bit of advice that I have carried with me for a long time came from the Scarecrow in the Wizard of Oz books. In the second book he said "I am convinced the only people worthy of consideration in this world are the unusual ones. For the common folks are like the leaves of a tree, and live and die unnoticed." and considering I work with convention folk on a daily basis - yeah, its true.

And to close with a bit of Groucho:
“I, not events, have the power to make me happy or unhappy today. I can choose which it shall be. Yesterday is dead, tomorrow hasn't arrived yet. I have just one day, today, and I'm going to be happy in it.”

Is this a quote thread now?

If that is the case I'll quote a stripper from my bachelor party:

"Pretty much everything is okay, just not in my face please."
