Can I play Vic20 games on my C64?

Post by Curlypaul »

Went rumaging around charity sops yesterday and bought a tape copy of Jeff Minters Matrix for the Vic20. I dont actually have a Vic20 so I was wondering it it would work on a C64?

C64 is currently packed away in the loft so though I would ask if someone already knew if it would work or not.

No, it will not work. Peripherals like the datasette, 1541, etc, will work but the software will not.

Only software that will work is programs written in Basic that didn't have any poke or peek routines.

If you ever do get a Vic20, as in any console or computer there are unique great games. I still like the Vic version of its faster Omega Race (Play it with a paddle emulating the Arcade Spinner) as well as Serpentine, Spiders of Mars, and Shamus. I think a great Hidden Gem is Type Attack, a Space Invaders Typing Tutor. Its on a game cart, for instant start. That old 22 column computer has the bigger fonts which worked a lot better for this particular game over the C64 version.

Here is a screenshot of Matrix. Jeff Minter made some wild games! If I remember right, I think you try to avoid the crossfire while shooting the centipede.

But obviously, we can all agree that the greatest game on the Vic20, and possibly the greatest game ever made, is Metagalactic Llamas Battle at the Edge of Time.

If you want to play this game, but on C64, you're looking for Gridrunner and Gridrunner II: Attack of the Mutant Camels. Both are cart games.

I was not aware of this title. I found a review here. Apparently there's a faithful Atari 8-bit port too.
