Why I chose the U.S. Toaster model to be best NES model

The top loader doesn't look bad because its RF out only,its because it puts vertical lines in games.

Does it do this as a rule? I can't say I've noticed any lines...

Yeah, it does this no matter what. Sometimes it can be hard to tell.

why? Something with internal shielding problems? Can it be easily fixed?

Sorry, but I've heard about but been unable to duplicate this problem and I am somewhat picky abut picture. I can distinguish a good RF signal from a bad one...

I really have no clue as to why it does this or if it can be fixed, but I know that all of the NES toploaders do this.

Did you try hooking up both to compare?

I sold a broken NES to a guy who was going to use it to mod his toploader to get rid of the lines. Its because of no sheilding. Even modding to AV out doesn't completly help. He said he would post me a how to once he is done, since I gave him the NES for free.

Maybe I'm crazy, but I thought there were select models of the Toploader that came stock with A/V outs...?
I've got two Toploaders and they both have the vertical lines and no A/V, but I'm sure I've seen somewhere that Nintendo DID make some with A/V outs. Maybe in Europe?

Someone posted a link before, there were some lucky people that sent in their top loader for service or complained or something and got back one with AV outs. But they're rare and weren't sold in stores I believe.

Yeah, that's how I've heard the story too. Man if you had one of those, it would be worth a pretty penny. I had considered getting my toploader modded by platinumfungi over on GameTZ forums as seen here http://gametz.com/?user=platinumfungi

Apparently he make a whole new video circuit to get rid of the annoying vertical lines mostly. However he recently re-evaluated his prices and the cost of an A/V mod went from around $50 or so to now $75 to "reflect the actual amount of time and effort involved". That $75 price is before shipping both ways keep in mind. After seeing that and considering some other factors, I decided I will just stick with my toaster. It may not be the cutest NES/Famicom but it gets the job done for me.

I prefer the front loader, simply because out of the box I can get composite and 100% compatibilty. I feel its a cleaner signal then RF toploader. Yes that 72 pin connector might be unreliable, I think of it as an over-sized SD card connector, a ziff socket. If mine fails, a simple replacement of the connector.

That's really my only complaint with the top loader. It's still my favorite because of the amount of space I'm saving.

I find the front loader saves the most space because it doesn't need to be loaded on top (sorry that was obvious and unnecessary). I have my Jaguar and Jaguar CD Drive on top of my NES and it saves a ton of space - two systems taking up one system's worth of space.

It really all comes down to your game system layout in your room(s).
If I had a front loader I'd probably stack other consoles on it as well. (I'd stack my top loader on top of the front loader. )
