If I hold two attack buttons at the same time, I use another type of shot depending on the buttons held in combination. What is this shots purpose?

I have this sword that I activate by holding all three buttons at the same time. It doesn't do squat for damage and it rarely deflects bullets. What's the point?

There were parts where you had to navigate extremely narrow corridors 100% filled with turrets. Even with me using my diagonal shot, I still found it quite impossible to get through this area without dying.

I remember there was this one boss that I fought for what seemed like forever. He'd spam beams, shots and what looked like a torrent of magma all over the place, and if I somehow evaded this, parts of his ship would separate and attack me from behind. I tried shooting him with every shot and combination of shot, and it never seemed to do much. I was seriously at a lose for what I was supposed to do.

After running out of credits, I just gave up. I like shmups, but not enough to metaphorically bang my head into the desk over and over again until it starts feeling good.
different weapons are for different enemies/bosses. the key is figuring out the best weapon for the job. the sword absorbs the round pink bullets and fills your energy meter, allowing for a massive sword attack which renders you invincible for a moment. the navigation is some of the most stressful, exhilarating, and ultimately rewarding gameplay ever. it literally squeezes sound out of me.
I think I know the boss you're talking about. that little pal of his sucks. I try and bomb him from the side but you gotta be quick. then zap that bitch with electricity.

How can this be? I never read the instruction book and I have never had trouble playing it. It's not a complicated shooter.

Maybe you play many shooters and get an intuitive feel for what you are meant to do from the contextual hints the game throws at you.

I certainly noticed from watching some other people play (not RS, other games) that people get clueless with things that are *extremely* obvious to me from the context, and I figure it is because of my background of playing hundreds of games (I'm pretty sure I'm at least in the hundreds by now). Back to RS, there is no doubt that the Treasure devs. played many great shooters before creating RS and Ikaruga and there are bound to be several "genre conventions" even if it may be subtle to the non-expert.

Ikaruga is quite more user friendly than RS, I think that is a given (I don't know if it is harder, though).

So...? I really can't see this affecting anyone other than people who were not intending to play the original SS game but rather just turn a profit on a much sought after game. I've had the game since it came out and I like to play it. I wouldn't part with it unless someone gave me an obscene amount of money like, $500 or more (I would just play a back-up then).
If someone is upset that they can't sell their copy for $200 anymore, perhaps they should have sold it for less and earlier.
Well if I foolishly paided $200.00 for a game I loved to play and watched the value plummet to $70.00 I would be rather upset. Its only natural to want a decent return on something you bought. After what happened to me when I bought Beatles Rock Band Limited Edition on launch day, I've learned my lesson about spending major cash on games. Watching the value plummet shortly after I paided $250.00 was a shitty experience.

Not to be confrontational here but if you foolishly (your term) overpaid for something then I entirely understand that you would be rather upset, but you should be upset at *yourself*, not at the external causes that caused the depreciation of your... asset.

In my opinion: when buying something like a videogame the natural (your term) expectation for a "decent return" is in terms of playing it (this is my opinion, I'm not trying to impose it).

If you buy stocks and naturally expect them to have a decent return in terms of fun, I would be surprised and advise you to consider games.

If you buy games and expect them to have a decent return in terms of profit, I would be surprised and advise you to consider stocks.

Not that it never happens that a game actually appreciates in value, but it is extremely rare and completely out of control. You can try to predict it but you will can not know if there will be some "reprint" that will make the value go down.

If you want a safe(r) investment subjected to regulations that block out certain outside manipulations (I'm making a comparison to the "reprinting" of a game), consider more conventional financial stuff which is indeed regulated.

No confrontation was felt man. I wasn't referring to making a profit. And I don't believe I mentioned profiting off games anywhere in my post. I was simply meant Radiant Silvergun has been worth a pretty penny for some time now, and if I wanted to sell a copy I wouldn't be looking to make a profit. It would however be nice to get a least get 80% and not 20% of my money back.

And believe me I'm about playing games and and not investing in them. I don't consider them a investment in any way. Anyone who does must be awful with money. I just sold half my collection recently, and I knew I wouldn't turn a profit but at least I got a return on most of my money. And not to sound confrontational either, but I think you really over analyzed my post.

A big difference between Silvergun and Beetles RB is that, most people know Silvergun is/was worth the money (at least until the XBLA version was announced).
And I'm curious for the person with the RS avatar, just how much did you pay for your RS?

:)

I just have this "if you want to invest, buy stocks" reasoning stored from when I played Magic: The Gathering (a famous TCG) and people often got upset if cards went down in value from reprinting. That kind of discussion arose somewhat frequently in that context and I think it is easy to see the similarities, the analysis was just adapted from there.

If you strictly wanted to play RS you could always do it on Mame or download the Iso everywhere for free .
People buying Saturn RS are collectors , price wont drop because of a down loadable version , never did for any game .
Gaia Seed did not drop , Ikaruga for gamecube didn't effect the DC price , Donpachi , Dodonpachi etc etc.

Actually "hard copy" prices have dropped for many downloadable games...

There are plenty of other examples too...
