Have your friends pay you to cough on their kids so they can get the virus early.

I have a one year old and on a trip to the doctor's last year he got a shot that i didn't know existed: a chicken pox vaccine.

You read that right. Kids no longer get to "enjoy" chicken pox.

There's a vaccine for it.

We are going to have a generation of softies. Chicken pox builds character, dammit.

Wow I did not know that. I remember getting chicken pox when I was about 8 or 9, and my mother who already had it when she was young caught it again. She was in a right state, couldn't move for being in pain. It seems to affect adults way more than it does kids. I didn't think it was too bad apart from the high temperature and resisting the urge to itch. It was really that painful at all for me. Thankfully. I just hope I never ever get it again.

Also I had shingles a couple of years ago and it didn't bother me. Just itchy.

Yeah, generally the older you are, the worse your chicken pox are.

I went through this when I was about 6, so I don't really remember much. I actually didn't know you could relapse on it. I also wasn't aware of the vaccine. I guess we're taking out all the pox.

Umm, it's not a vaccine.......

I got it when I was a kid, the doc "vaccinated me" when I was five and the shot is designed to purposely give your kid the chicken pox so that you don't get it when you're an adult.

EDIT!: Did some more research and it turns out the IS a vaccine for it now....who woulda thunk it?

Also, it's apparently dangerous as hell in the long term and wears after about 10-15 years:

No offense, but I'll trust my doc over some Wikipedia entry. The shot my son got hasn't been around 10-15 years, so many of those claims are speculative at best. It seems all vaccines are controversial these days, which is frankly bullshit. Vaccines have done more to increase global mortality than anything else in human history.

Also, this is worth watching:

EDIT: Also, an interesting follow up science blog entry: http://scienceblogs.com/insolence/2010/ ... accine.php

I said "Apparently it's dangerous" trust me man I'm not going to trust a five second google search over a physician. Just noting that it seems to be possibly risky in the long term.

I'm pro vaccination though, just not overexposure. After all the immune system's there for a reason.

Damn straight Chicken Pox builds character. I have a couple scars from getting Chicken Pox as a kid. And everyone knows that scars are badass and chicks dig scars.

But in all seriousness apparently the older you get the more dangerous chicken pox are so be happy you got them now, I guess. The earlier the better, except when babies get it.

If it makes you feel any better I had Mono for three months and then went straight into having Viral Meningitis for four months right after that. That was literally the worst thing I have ever gone through and the whole ordeal lasted over half a year. I still haven't put back on the weight I lost and that was over a year ago. Just remember that things could be a lot worse.
