Saturn Mod Chip problem :(

Hello!

I e-mailed racketboy about this but I thought I might post this in the forums and see if anyone had any ideas for me.

I just got my mod-chip today, first ever mod and I installed it with no problems and everything seemed to be working fine. My Saturn is a 32 pin model 2, and I connected it using the signal wire and such.

My backup copy of my game Pandemonium worked great but one thing I noticed was when I opened the cd door the disk would slow down but it would never stop, like it would without the chip in it. Also, even weirder I noticed the disks were spinning counter clockwise, I thought this was odd so I took out the chip and sure enough NiGHTS went spinning clockwise like it should.

I really don't know if maybe the chip is supposed to do those things but like I said, I'm new to this so I wasn't sure.

So finally, I thought maybe the chip wasn't sitting down deep enough in the slot like I read on the trouble shooting page, so I filed down the edges slightly, but now ever since I've done that, it doesn't want to work at all. Short sega intro screen but the disk will spin slowly counter clockwise but it won't check disks or do anything from there.

I'm at the end of my rope, I dunno what to do now...I guess I should have just left it alone, but I really thought something was wrong since the cd wouldn't stop when the lid was open. I took the chip out and the Saturn runs fine, so again, I'm stumped, if anyone has any ideas I would be very greatful...

What he means is that's some pretty strange behavior...

Pictures and/or video might be helpful for diagnosis...

yea, your telling me, it seriously spins backwards... I can try to get some video of it now, but like I said I can't get the chip to work like it did, so I could probably only show the odd start up thing its doing. Plus I live in wonderful no where Indiana so I'll see if I can get a video loaded up from dial up, fun times >.<'.

I even tried the AB method and nothing seems to work, I dunno, I'm fairly techie so this is just about killing me that I can't figure it out.

Heres a pic of the inside. I also took a video of what it does with the chip in right now, even with the cd drive open, the disk just slowly spins backwards. It works fine without the chip in....so I dunno...


I'll post that video in a little bit, got to convert it and upload...and with dial up...be a few >.>

Heres the video in case anyone wants to see it, with the chip in, and it connected now all the saturn does is turn counterclock wise slowly...so I dunno, I took the chip out for now, not sure what to do, oh well...

I've actually seen this before... twice.

Difference is I saw this on a model 1 board after I did my first ever modchip modification to turn it into a 20 pin chip... it was caused by a bad wire solder and I shaved the pin to much so the thing slid out off the pins a little to much... fixed the solder point and stuck a tooth pick to seat the chip properly and it worked again.

The other time I saw it was in a model 2. This time though it was before mal and everyone over at SX found the A+B trick... and I didn't have a soldering gun. I soldered the wire to the chip via a heated sewing needle... and it was just a bad solder point.

I'm gonna lean towards your issue being similar to my model 1 incident... can we get a pic of your chip out of the system... so I can see how you shaved it down.

Also make sure it is seated nicely and all the pins line up properly.

Heres an up close picture of the chip and the connector at the bottom, it did stop working after I filed it down...but I barely filed it I thought, just like a few passes.


Also, why does the chip make the drive run backwards? I know it runs clockwise without the chip in it...oh well I'll try to line up the chip again maybe, see if I get anything different.

Well I guess I have another idea, the signal wire broke off so I did a "quick" AB trick but I'm guessing that it is no good, because I removed it and the drive is doing the same thing, so I'll go get some new soldering stuff and try it again, thanks again to all who are helping

I stopped doing the AB method because for me it's only had about 60 or 70 percent chance of success... yeah it's easier, but soldering directly to the pin has worked way more many times for me..
