Couple other options.
1. You could get a dedicated USB PC-Mac gamepad. Tons to choose from.

Re: Sorry, nooby question about controllers.
Post back your thoughts when you get it, I've been looking for something like that for a while. The saturn pad is an official sega pad, but that one I'm not so sure about. But it would be nice to have something like that for snes emulation, or I may just buy one of those snes/usb converters. Your feedback would be appreciated, and also help me decide which (if any) I should get.

The only way to deactivate the ray beam and fight back the vampire alien threat is with a complicated series of foot patterns on the device's control board that looks remarkably like a DDR pad. We will all praise this man for saving our lives and buy him a mountain of stuffed animals.

I'd get this:

I know it's more expensive, but RetroUSB makes some good shit.

I have a Saturn USB pad. Great controller. I've been using it to play Street Fighter IV.
I didn't buy the pre-made SNES pad from retrousb, instead I bought the kit and made my own out of an official SNES controller. It's pretty simple to do if you have soldered before, and probably doable if you have not.
As far as I can tell, both are recognized as standard USB gamepads. I didn't need to install any extra drivers to use them with Windows XP or Ubuntu.

Shoot, now I'm wondering if I should get that 33 dollar one of RetroUsb. The one from amazon is cheaper, around 15 bucks, but what if it's cheaper in quality? Also, even tho it's an SNES usb controller, it'll work with other things besides an snes emulator, right?

Yeah, as long as whatever you're doing at least supports keyboard input, you'll be able to use a usb controller. Even then, I've rarely had to do that to get it to work.Veno wrote:Shoot, now I'm wondering if I should get that 33 dollar one of RetroUsb. Re: Sorry, nooby question about controllers.
A couple things:
When it comes to USB controllers, the old saying is often true - you get what you pay for.
That cheap knock off SNES controller with USB is just that - cheap and will not feel right when you use it.
I recommended Retrozone's USB converter for REAL SNES controllers. I still stand buy this recommendation. You can find used SNES controllers around for $5 each, and that seems to be exactly what you are after.
If you'd prefer a six button controller, you can buy Sega Saturn USB controllers on ebay for $20 and free shipping from Hong Kong. There's been a lot of debate if these controllers are official Sega products or not, but what nobody can argue with is that they're quality controllers that work perfectly on any PC or PS3.
If you're going to play Melty Blood, this is the controller I would recommend.
Just remember the golden rule: don't cheap out when buying controllers. This is the reason we have companies like madkatz
(save for their super expensive high quality arcade sticks)

Sweet, thanks again guys. So now it's narrowed between SNES controller with usb adapter, or Sega Saturn usb controller. This is gonna be a hard choice.

I personally own the Saturn USB controller and can tell you it works. I did a review of them.
Audio quality isn't the best, but this will tell you all you need to know.

Wow dude, nice review. It told me what I needed to hear, plus some cool extra stuff, like the layout for working on the PS3. Thanks for the review, I'm gonna go with one of these.
