Alright, I'm not sure where this should go, so putting it here.
Are there any consoles that are infamous for a certain problem, that is easy and/or cheap to fix? I am fine with soldering, I like repairing things, and I like retro gaming, so why not kill two birds with one stone, and expand my collection?
I have a NES, SNES, N64, GC, DC, Xbox, and a PS2, I would prefer to fix up a console I don't have and add it to my collection, but if there's any repairs I could do on a system I already own, I can always sell it for profit.
On a side note, anybody know why a Dreamcast would stop powering up entirely? The power light blinks for a second and then goes out, it's not the PSU, I've swapped it with a PSU from a working DC before.
Thanks!
Easy Fix Consoles?

Since you said you'd solder, you can learn to replace cartridge connections (ie. the NES' 72-pin connector).

I already knew about it, but thanks!GSZX1337 wrote:Since you said you'd solder, you can learn to replace cartridge connections (ie. the NES' 72-pin connector).
EDIT: Allow me to clarify, I'm really going more for the systems that can be bought dirt-cheap broken, and fix easily/cheaply.

The NES cartridge port actually slots into the motherboard itself like a cartridge and requires no soldering.GSZX1337 wrote:Since you said you'd solder, you can learn to replace cartridge connections (ie. the NES' 72-pin connector).

Yeah, the NES "ZIF" 72-pin connector is solderless. However, you still could replace the pin connectors on other consoles.

Well shit, I always thought you soldered those.Mod_Man_Extreme wrote:The NES cartridge port actually slots into the motherboard itself like a cartridge and requires no soldering.GSZX1337 wrote:Since you said you'd solder, you can learn to replace cartridge connections (ie. the NES' 72-pin connector).

I do hope you were never tasked with replacing one.GSZX1337 wrote:Well shit, I always thought you soldered those.Mod_Man_Extreme wrote:The NES cartridge port actually slots into the motherboard itself like a cartridge and requires no soldering.GSZX1337 wrote:Since you said you'd solder, you can learn to replace cartridge connections (ie. the NES' 72-pin connector).

Re: Easy Fix Consoles?
I just bypassed some corroded traces on a 2600 with some wire patches. That was pretty easy. Of course it's a 30 year old console and anything might have fizzled out too. GGs and cap replacement?

I actually have one with bad caps, how hard is it to replace? I've replaced caps on a monitor before, but these are surface mount and look like a pain to do. And can I trouble you for links for replacements?Hobie-wan wrote:I just bypassed some corroded traces on a 2600 with some wire patches. That was pretty easy.
