lately, my love for shmups has been analogous to a fly's love for shit.
i may suck at 'em, but boy do i love to play 'em. especially the easy ones. and lords of thunder def is easy. if a threesome occurred between a generic shmup, the mega man series, and an inventory store the resulting offpsring would be lords of thunder. it is a kick ass game, but i am probably just saying that because it is one of the few shmups that i can beat.
was it you, dsheinem, that said lords of thunder for pce was your favorite shmup? have you played the sega cd version? if so, how do they compare?

Re: Games Beaten: 2010
Hello. This is my first post in this thread.
NES
Castlevania - For the first time ever, I beat this. I had to use save states, though. I used them somewhat conservatively, saving the state every time I reached a new section of a level. Even using those, the game was incredibly frustrating at times and I can't imagine beating it without some sort of help. You'd really have to have this game and its bosses memorized.
SNES
Final Fantasy 3 (AKA 6) - On previous attempts, I only played this for an hour. This time, I really got into it and I'd say that it's probably one of, if not the best, of the series, and I've tried all of them through 12. It's also the first FF I've actually beat. I usually get to the end of the game, I start doing side quests, and then lose interest, but this one had me hooked from beginning to end.
Sega Genesis
Light Crusader - I loved it. The puzzles were mostly clever. The dungeons got a little redundant, however.
PC
Mount and Blade: Warband - One of my favorite games of all time.
Starcraft 2

Monkey Island is a classic, I was pissed off that they used a Sierra style control though, felt like a slap in the face to long time Lucasarts fans.
Zombie Island was a decent piece of DLC, played on my second playthrough account, it was fairly hard in terms of hordes of zombie, but good fun, even though after finishing the campaign the gameplay was starting to feel old.

Ghosts 'n Goblins: Gold Knights II was better than the first game, and much harder IMO. The boss fights were more intense and the levels leading up to them presented much more of a challenge than those in the first entry. As with that game, the controls aren't great, but I think they are much more palatable once you get used to them by beating something like Mega Man 2 on the virtual d-pad first.
The Incident was a BLAST! The retro-style graphics are visually appealing right off the bat, and the motion-controlled gameplay is completely addicting. The music has been stuck in my head for days. I can't say enough good about it, if you have an iPhone, this game is a must buy.

I think I miscounted somewhere along the line, cause I just checked again and it looks like I was off by two.
Super Mega Worm caught my eye at first because of the retro-style graphics, but kept my attention with its fun gameplay. You play as a worm that is reminiscent of something from the movie "Tremors". Your objective is simple: DESTROY. Kill stuff and you will level up. As your worm levels up, it will get bigger and gain new abilities such as projectiles and EMPs. iPhone users need to try this out.
Pizza Boy also was on my radar due to its obvious retro inspirations. It's a platformer that would have felt at home in the early to mid-90s on the SNES. Some reviews I read called it easy, but those reviewers must not have played into the second and third worlds... the virtual d-pad is the best I've used on any iPhone game, but the various hazards and enemies that the game throws at you will keep you on your toes at all times! Another great iPhone game.
Dark Void Zero was hard as hell, and I played on easy. They only give you so many lives, and there are no continues if you die before reaching the end of a level. There is a checkpoint system between levels, but the game keeps track of how many lives you have. I had to memorize the first stage and stockpile lives without losing any in order to have a real chance at finishing the game. The gameplay is excellent however, and the old school graphics are freaking awesome.
Warlock Bentspine is an indie game that I downloaded a month or so ago and finally got around to beating yesterday. It's a totally polished game that has a quirky atmosphere. It plays like Mega Man and looks and feels like it was made for the NES. The levels were challenging, although a bit short, and the bosses provided a ton of frustration... but its good frustration, like the Mega Man kind. Google it and download it for free, its totally worth it!
R-Type Leo was fun, but didn't really feel like R-Type to me. Too many differences in the core gameplay. My son loved watching me play it though.
Altered Beast was Altered Beast... I just felt obligated to beat it, since I was never really a Sega kid and didn't do it 15 years ago. I must say though, the graphics on the arcade version did look nice compared to the Genesis version that I played before.
Elevator Action Returns was AWESOME! This really is the definition of a hidden gem. I've heard it mentioned a few times, but never really gave it any notice until last night. The gameplay is totally addicting and the atmosphere in this game is cooler than the other side of the pillow. If you can't MAME it there is a Saturn version available to import, but I guess its pretty rare.

Re: Games Beaten: 2010
January - June: 50 games (click for titles and stats)
Angry Birds -iPhone
Deathsmiles - 360
Bonk's Adventure - PCE
Halo: ODST - 360
Need For Speed: Undercover -iPhone
Dante's Inferno -PS3
BlazBlu: Calamaity Trigger -PS3
Space Invaders: Infinity Gene -iPhone
Ridge Racer - PS1
Tiki Totems - iPhone
Fallout 3 - PS3
Cyvern - The Dragon Weapons - MAME
DoDonPachi Resurrection - iPhone
Battlefield Bad Company 2 - PS3 *new*
Cameltry - PSP/Arcade (Taito Collection) *new*
Psyvariar - PS2 *new*
Total: 66
Bad Company 2's campaign was easily the best "realistic" FPS shooter I have played in recent memory, easily topping both Infinity Ward and Teryarch's recent COD games. The challenge was much fairer than in BC1 (which I found difficult on the default setting), and the story was actually interesting/compelling. I prefer the multiplayer in this game as well, but haven't had much time for it...
Cameltry was something I picked up yesterday and played through fairly quickly, finishing through the expert level stages. It reminded me quite a bit of the special stages in Sonic 1, and was well suited to the PSP screen/controls.
Psyvariar had to be credit fed towards the end, as the game is vicious in its bullet presentation during some of the later boss fights. Still, it was a blast to play and I am looking forward to playing the sequel sometime soon.
As I suspected, the game playing has slowed down considerably now that the academic year is in full swing. At the end of June, I was on pace for 100 for the year, but now that mark looks much harder to attain unless I focus almost exclusively on short games. Hopefully in the next update I can add Halo Reach and Metroid Other M to the list, as I am approaching the half way point in each (though both are starting to bore me and feel tedious).
