What I wanted to say is software that is by unknown companies and is not a standard.
I don't buy any software that is not used as a standard or created by a well known company.
I figure that if huge companies like Apple and Microsoft has a lot of bugs in their software, what kind of bugs would an indie developer have in their software? Especially that i bought software earlier in my lifetime from unknown companies that was not even worth half what I paid. It was next to worthless.
Software I use are all standard, VLC-Handbrake-Photoshop-Firefox-Toast titanium, you get the idea.
Do you use any obscure/indie software? If so what do you use? Why won't you chose a standard alternative for it?
example of a software that is unknown I used to like back in the day is : the PrintShop http://www.broderbund.com/c-31-the-print-shop.aspx

Yep. There's some good indie stuff out there.

And of course some indie games like Cave Story and more.

I use Blender some, while it's a pretty good program it's far from standard. But still sometimes I can make a model waaay faster than I could in something else. That's about it for me, I used to use OpenOffice, but OneNote sucked me into MS Office. And there's still no real replacement for Photoshop or Illustrator.
Re: Do you use indie software?
I used CDex and foobar2000. Both are top notch open source programs.

I use non-commercial software exclusively, except for games. There's really nothing I need to do that can't be done with open source, in many cases better than commercial alternatives.

Zoundry Raven is good if you like posting on blogs.
Cave Story (it's pretty well known now, but whatever. It's an indie game)
Sonic Megamix (Sega CD homebrew)
I'll also second foobar2000. It's an excellent media player. GIMP is also a pretty decent alternative to Photoshop if you're in a pinch, as long as you can put up with the interface. Blender is also a pretty popular (but free) 3d modeller.

Last I checked foobar2000 isn't open source. Free, yes.fvgazi wrote:I used CDex and foobar2000. Both are top notch open source programs.
Still love it though.
Re: Do you use indie software?
im using Songbird as my media player, its pretty cool and can sync music to my Droid thats a plus and its free im not sure about open source.
i also use VLC for movies.
and i just started using a program called game booster (i think) it was posted on lifehacker this past week and it kills extra processes for more gaming power.

I'm running Ubuntu right now; I try to use it whenever possible. The multiple desktops feature makes it much more enjoyable to use than Windows. The only reason I still have Windows as a boot option on my computer is because the Wine emulator can't run everything perfectly.
