Super Mario World (SNES PAL) on HD: 'pixelated' colors?

Post by batou »

I've scanned through a number of websites with information on hooking up an SNES to an HD TV, but have not been able to find anything on the impact on (background) colors. When I recently hooked up my old SNES (PAL) to my Panasonic tx-l32g10b, using the multi-out to RGB cable, the colors for Super Mario World came out 'pixelated' (see attached screenshots). I seem to remember that the colors on my old tv were completely smooth. Does anyone have an idea what causes this and whether it can be fixed? Is this a result of upscaling?

Welcome new member!

Resolution of SNES stretched to a widescreen HD LCD, results in the pixels.
There are solutions, though some are not cheap.

I wrote an extensive article at my CRT VS LCD signature link.

My Viera does the exact same thing. It's nothing to worry about it's quite possibly the way the SNES does colours that are outside it's palette. You don't notice them on an interlaced screen because it blends the difference in the colour.

Older systems have a problem with lcd and plasma tvs because of the way the colors are displayed. The best option for clear image is sticking to a backup tube tv for the best experience. I'm with you guys however because I would love to clearly play some snes on my 50".

To be honest, it looks pretty neat. It looks like the game was sewn together.

It's always a compromise in my opinion. Play on a small screen or 50''. If you have a decent lag free scaler in your hdtv and a proper deinterlacer, games can look almost as good on a HDTV.

I've said it in a dozen or so of this type of thread... but my SNES looks amazing on my HDTV via S-Video. Just lucky, I guess (knock on wood - so my TV doesn't explode!).

My SNES looks awesome on my 42" Vizio when emulated though my PC via VGA with filters on. I never found old games to look good on newer TVs though. They were built for low res and thats what they play best on. I have a older CRT just for this reason and they look great!
