It's also worth mentioning that the famicom version of Castlevania III is superior to the NES release because it contained the VRC6 chip, which allowed it to produce much better music.

Very true - as does Lagrange Point, I think. Only downside is that you'll have to be using a Famicom and not an NES-with-Famicom-converter set up.

A couple of Super Famicom carts also came to mind, specifically, Star Ocean and Secret of Mana 2 aka Seiken Densetsu 3.
