Xbox1 emus versus Wii

Post by D.D.D. »

(Thinking about picking up a modded Xbox...)
I think the Wii emulators are really good (at least the NES, SNES, GEN, TG emus are) but who has compared them to the Xbox emus? I've always heard they are good on the Xbox1 but I'm wondering if the Wii ones are better (as they're newer).
 (FC, AVFC, NES, SFC x2, SNES, N64, GC x2, Wii x2)*(G&W x7, GB, GBpocket, GBASP, DS-L x2)
(GEN, SS x3, DC x3)*(PCE-Duo)*(Xbox:500GB)*(NGCDZ, NGPC)*(PS1, PStwo, PS3:160GB, PSP.3K)

The X-Box emulators are either as good or better in every case that I've heard of.

I agree 100%. Get an Xbox. I'd get one for FBA XXX Pro 1.28 alone. Neo Geo, CPS-1 and 2 perfection.

If we're talking homebrew, the Xbox ones are more mature. There are decent emulators on the xbox even for Ps1 (PCSX has an xbox port). WiiSX on the other hand, is still slow and a little bit low on the compatibility side.

But the Wii could go toe to toe if we factor in VC.

I use my Xbox1 to emulate:

Neo-Geo
CPS 1
CPS 2
Sega CD
Sega MegaDrive/Genesis
Sega Master System
Sega Gamegear
Commodore Amiga (there is even a special Workbench for the Xbox1)
Commodore 64
ZX Spectrum
PSX
N64
DOS
PC-Engine

I use my Wii to emulate:

NES
SNES
GB/GBC/GBA
N64 (sometimes)
SCUMMVM

the ones in bold are the ones I am very particular about

emulating computers on the Wii is so-so, mainly due to no ability to change controller (yet) (for most computers; Amiga, C64, Spectrum) where you have to use the Wii-mote sideways and that is utter crap if you play those computers

the Sega CD is very important IMO and since the Wii can't handle it, that's also a Xbox1 specific

ScummVM on the Wii, mainly due to controlling with the Wii-mote as mouse and it can handle Monkey Island 3, etc.

GBA runs smoother on Wii than on Xbox1, so that's an obvious choice

N64 is so-so on both machines, but the Xbox1 gives you more emulators to choose from, so I prefer Xbox1 for that as well

in general, the Xbox1 has many more emulators and is better at emulating most of them

in order to get emulators for both, try this one:

http://www.xbins.org/

and here is Xbins.exe which is a mIRC/FTP program in one, that connects directly to Xbins and there you have all emulators available for Xbox1 and (IIRC) also for the Wii

http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php? ... 8170&st=15

good luck and if you have questions, I am rather familiar with the Xbox1 scene =)

:edit

it's worth noting that all Nintendo consoles that the Wii can emulate, is as good on the Xbox1, apart from GBA (and of course NDS, but I seriously doubt that it's any good on the Wii)

What do you use for a classic controller on the Xbox? The buttons on the oXbox have a lot of travel, it's hard to keep mashing buttons forever when playing a shmup. Games designed for the xbox generally rapid-fire when you hold down the button. But emulated games don't always do that. This is what pushed me back to using the PC for emulation, I can use a USB Saturn or Logitech Dual Action as needed.

there are a wide variety of choices available, the ones I'd recommend would be to hack/mod a NES/SNES/Genesis/etc. controller to be used on in conjunction with the Xbox1 controller (there's a thread about it in the hack/mods thread, I'll see if I can dig it up)

if you're not technical enough for that (I know I'm not =/ ) you can always get an adapter to use the PlayStation 2 controller

it's not as good as the Wii Classic Controller (IMO), but it has a nice D-Pad

converters may be difficult to find for the Xbox1 these days, but I'm certain they're available on-line

the beauty of it, is also that you can configure just about any emulator to what buttons you want to use

:edit

here's the link to a lot of modifications to enable just about any controller on the Xbox1

http://www.racketboy.com/forum/viewtopi ... 27&t=21420

it may take some time and patience, which I sorely lack, but it seems easy enough if you're somewhat familiar with soldering, etc.

So comparing the Xbox emulators to ones on a PC, which would you say play better (smoothness, compatibility, etc)?

I guess the Xbox emus for arcade games and PC interest me the most right now especially since they're not so good on the Wii for now. Who knows if they will get better or not.

I'm trying to see if I really want to get an oXbox versus getting a 360 w/HDD (and playing some games on BC).
Do you ever play Xbox games off the HDD? Is it smooth like the Wii/USBLoaderGX? Is the FTP from PC to Xbox simple and streamlined?

PC will always be superior when it comes to emulation (of course depending on how powerful a PC you have), but the Xbox does Arcade games really well IMO

I've had no greater issues with nor MAME, nor Kawaks on the Xbox1

of course new games such as the 3D games for MAME (Tekken 3, Soul Calibur, etc.) don't run on the Xbox1, but just about anything 2D you can throw at it will work fine

I'm using a 120GB HD and I can fit just about all the Arcade games I like to play on the Xbox1

one of the pro's (I'm not sure if that's the word, but one of the positive aspects) of using the Xbox1, is that in my experience I rarely format the Xbox1, nor do I ever need more space, thus my ROMS/Emulators on the Xbox1 stays where they are, whereas my PC sometimes get short on space, etc. hence I need to actually get rid of ROMS for it

there are a multitude of Front-ends available for the PC in order to make the experience smoother if you want to emulate, but at the same time, you always have to hook up your PC to the TV, sound system, etc. in order to get the full experience

of course this may not always prove to be a problem, especially not if you're playing on your monitor instead, but I prefer the TV

it feels (to me) as if there's less of a hassle with emulating on my Xbox1 compared to PC in general, since it's a simple download of ROMS/Emulators and then you're basically good to go

there is also the X-Arcade stick available for both PC and Xbox1

http://www.xgaming.com/

I can't afford one myself, but if it's within your price-range it is the (from what I've heard) rather perfect for a true Arcade-experience

considering how cheap Xbox1 are these days (modded or not), I dare say that it's not that big of a loss if you would buy one

I've never tried running any Wii games off of USB/HD, but the Xbox1 runs really, really fast if you compare games such as the SSX series on Xbox1 vs. PS2

I've plenty of games on the HD for my Xbox1, as well as multiple front-ends, the one preferred IMO is XBMC (Xbox Media Center), which turns your Xbox1 into a... Media Center =)

if you have a 120gb HD on your Xbox1 you can fit plenty of both Xbox1 games and ROMS, all available through a couple of simple pushes with the buttons

I find this to be more convenient than on PC as everything is set-up in such a simple manner

in order to transfer from PC to Xbox1 all you need is Qwix

http://www.xbox-hq.com/html/modules.php ... ew&gid=304

it allows you to manage titles on the Xbox1, etc. (if you have the Avalaunch Front-End installed) and it goes really fast

also you can just use standard FTP in order to transfer files

if you don't already own a Xbox1, I dare say that there is no reason not to get a modded one

the 360 has backwards compatibility, but only with certain games, since it emulates those games, rather than just plays them off the bat like PS1 games on a PS2

here is a backwards compatibility list:

http://www.xbox.com/en-US/games/backwar ... eslist.htm

do note if you play Xbox1 games on a Xbox360, it will still load rather slow compared to the original

also on with a modded Xbox1, you are able to run modifications for certain games (I per example always run a modded Morrowind and GTA: San Andreas), which further adds to the experience

all in all, you should probably check up prices of modded Xbox1's (I live in Sweden, so I'm note sure where you should look)

considering all titles available for the Xbox1 and the emulators, as well as XBMC, it is in my opinion the best of last generation consoles due to diversity

Xbox1 games are also available rather cheap (as well as downloadable) and in general it is the console that I use the most out of all my consoles

hope all of this helped somewhat, if you have further questions, etc just let me know =)
