Help me get back into RPGs

Post by Frizz.Meister »

RPGs while they have never been my favourite genre used to be the games i poured the most time into. However after my recent purchase of FF XIII i just cant seem to get into any RPGs.

Here is how i play FF XIII/the only way
-Watch amazing cutscene about some imaginative story.
-Walk in a strait line with automated jumps
-Watch another cutscene. Again awesome and the story gets even better
-Battle boss with technique or setting 2 party members to medic, 1 to commando. Press A for 25mins while i slowly kill boss which has litterally millions of HP with my 2000 dmg attacks

So i thought maybe FF XIII isnt for me, ill revisit some old favourites like golden sun and final fantasy tactics, secret of evermore. Cant get into them again, its not that the story is bad just dont have the same passion to build up my characters. Although golden sun did last me one decent session.

Any advice?

You have RPG dysfunction. There's a pill for that.

Seriously speaking though, maybe you could try a minimal-grind RPG, since you said that you just don't have the passion to build up your characters.

Persona 3 and 4 are minimal grind, since a lot of bosses can be beaten just by bringing the correct personas to exploit the bosses' weaknesses. Sakura Wars goes even farther--the game literally has no grinding.

More cowbell. (sorry if you didn't get that, seeing as you're in the UK)

Maybe play through Chrono Trigger or Final Fantasy VI? Either that, or get into WRPGs like Oblivion, Fallout 3, Fable II or Mass Effect.

Yeah Breetai's got it. If FF6 and Chrono Trigger don't do it change gears and go to WRPGs.

I'll recommend Tales of Symphonia again. It's an excellent segway back into RPGs, since it has a real-time battle system. There is also little grinding necessary. The best thing about ARPGs is that you're not just menu-navigating your way through everything; actual startegy and timing is necessary in battles. Live A Live. It's divided into several parts, each one taking place in different time periods. So you can choose which interests you the most. Each has different gameplay styles too. Feel like doing some stealth action? Play through Oboro's chapter. Feel like doing some classic Adventure-type games? Cube and Sundown's chapters have that. Want to pilot a giant mech with this in the background? Play Akira's chapter.
