I almost want to think that some guy started that as a joke. Then a bunch of people joined as a joke. And he thought he had found real life nutjobs. Then more people saw the site and thought "wow! what a bunch of nutjobs!" so they joined as well to make outlandish posts and see if all these "nutjobs" would buy it. The other nutjobs, being bored people thinking they're tricking other nutjobs continued to post as a joke and so on.
That or people are really dumb. But my description also fits the way the internet works.
