any nintendo ds lite repair experts here?

Post by cowgod »

the hinge broke on my nintendo ds lite, so i purchased a new shell and began the project of replacing it today. everything was going fairly well until i went to replace the colored square on the bottom screen with the new color.

instead of peeling off just the square colored rim, i peeled off the whole touchscreen. i carried on and put it all back together and, guess what, my touchscreen doesn't work.

i had also accidentally pulled out the very small ribbon cable that attaches the touchscreen to the motherboard, so i was hoping it was just a loose connection, but i fear that i ruined the touchsreen when i peeled it off before.

i noticed, where the ribbon cable is attached to the touchscreen, there is a thin silver film around the outer edge. some of this peeled off, which i'm guessing is the conductor to send touches to the motherboard? it's really hard to explain. look at this picture: http://www.dealextreme.com/photogallery ... 3245~seQ.2

did my peeling off the touchscreen destroy it?

I'm not an expert in the slightest, but if the touch screen doesn't work and the ribbon cable is plugged in, your best bet is probably just buying a new touch screen.

The pics are informative, a painful indicator of what might have happened to yours. I think you are correct in you surmise. Conductivity is lost on that peeled contact trace. Best analogy I can offer is a trace of a flexible PCB compromised. Replacement screen at this stage of repair may prove more costly the a used DS. Maybe get one on the cheap once the 3D version makes a showing?

i took the whole thing apart again and quadruple checked that the ribbon cable was plugged in properly and i can't get it to work.

amazingly, you can get a new touch screen on dealextreme.com for $2.60, so i ordered one. hopefully that will get the ds smooth sailing again.

thanks for the insight.
