I think that HG101 article means that there are two types of Beat Em' Up fans:
1. Ones that like the genre because of its ball-busting difficulty and constant challenge.
2. Ones that like the genre because of its simple goals and fun gameplay.
Now, it is not to say that these traits don't cross over into one another; there's a whole spectrum in between the two. But, I think it is plausible to think there is a distinction. This explains the mixed reviews for the game, and why it rubs people in the first group the wrong way.

Re: Scott Pilgrim vs. The World
That's great news for scott pilgrim. such an amazing game despite random glitches.
Wow, EWJ HD got #3? That game was dated by 1994. The only port I ever picked up was the SNES version, which I regretted buying.

Just your opinion, pal. EWJ was a fresh platformer in 1994. It wasn't on par with the greatness of S&K or Super Metroid but it was certainly heads and shoulders above most platformers of the time.Satoshi_Matrix wrote:Wow, EWJ HD got #3? As for Scott Pilgrim, it felt good for the first ten minutes then it became an exercise in repetition. Self-aware 8-bit style games (the graphical glitches in the bonus stages were quite forced IMHO) are not my thing.

Well then, how DO you think they should have handled the game? I found the retro style quite charming.Pulsar_t wrote:Just your opinion, pal. EWJ was a fresh platformer in 1994. I like the retro style. It's like going back to my childhood, playing all those NES games for the first time.
I love the 4 player local co-op. I would never play it online if available, but playing it in the same room with 3 other people, laughing and swearing and whatnot, has to be one of the best gaming experiences possible today. Right up there with Rock Band for social gaming.

As far as the source material is concerned - if they did anything else, the fans would have f'ing rioted.Pulsar_t wrote: As for Scott Pilgrim, it felt good for the first ten minutes then it became an exercise in repetition. However, even without me knowing jack crap about Scott Pilgrim, the style of the game had me standing at attention from day one - and the game did not disappoint. Not quite perfect, but it was far and above almost every other beat 'em up I've ever played.

Man, we really are like opposite sides of the spectrum when it comes to Scott Pilgrim. Personally, I wouldn't even include it in a top twenty list of beat'em ups. I'm glad you, lisalover and others enjoyed it, but seriously, best beat'em up ever. Really?the7k wrote:As far as the source material is concerned - if they did anything else, the fans would have f'ing rioted.Pulsar_t wrote: As for Scott Pilgrim, it felt good for the first ten minutes then it became an exercise in repetition. It's cool though, always happy to see people enjoying a beat'em up game but I think it falls way short of that kind of praise, but it would be interesting to poll people who have played it and see where they would rank it among other beat'em ups. I'm curious

Yeah, out of all the beat 'em ups I've played (and I've played at least everything CPS1 & 2 has to offer, plus just about everything on SNES and Saturn), I just prefer SP. I know the reason I prefer it is due to all the defensive and mobility options - something classic beat 'em ups have usually completely forgot to even consider.Gamerforlife wrote: Man, we really are like opposite sides of the spectrum when it comes to Scott Pilgrim. Different strokes for different folks, I guess. I even put SP's Boss Rush Mode over Battle Circuit, which has for years been my Go-To Time-Killer (ya know, for when you don't feel like getting caught up in a long game of D&D or Guardian Heroes - heck, I even think I prefer SP to Guardian Heroes, at this point.)

Re: Scott Pilgrim vs. The World
I agree with 7k on this; Scott Pilgrim vs the world is easily the best beat 'em up I've played in years. Konami's classic arcades, Streets of Rage 2 and a few others are still great in my book, but to me Scott Pilgrim is lightening in a bottle when it comes to what I want in a beat 'em up;
Looks like a new Neo-Geo MVS game
Has River City Ransom depth
Has great replay value
Has CHIPTUNE music
Is not so hard you'll hate it, but not so easy you can beat it without any effort
Has multiplayer, but the multiplayer isn't required to enjoy it
Most importantly, it's fun.
How can anyone argue with that...?
