How far does the memory in one VMU stretch? I know this depends on what sort of games you like to play, but on average how many do you use?
Also, is it worth going for a larger, third party card or are they just too unreliable to waste my time on?
Thanks
How many Dreamcast VMU's?
Re: How many Dreamcast VMU's?
I have like 4 or 5 official VMUs and I admit its a pain to keep track of which one has the game save I need at the time. I thought about getting a third party one, but between the concerns about reliability and the lack of a screen, I haven't picked one up.Curlypaul wrote:How far does the memory in one VMU stretch? As in the past, I recommend getting a Nexus. I use 2 for a total of 1600blocks in one controller.

Its pretty easy to locate a game save on these. What I did was as I was playing new games, I'd always make sure to create a save off of it, and as the pages in these cards filled, I would use the next page. Most of my game auto-load my saves off the cards in the first pages, but if they don't I just hit the page button on each card until the game finds the save.
Aside from these two, I still have a couple official VMUs. I also had one until recently that I originally found in a muddle puddle on the corner of the block of my first home. The screen was scrambled but it still saved just fine. I found it interesting because aside from 1 friend of mine, I didn't know of anyone else who had a Dreamcast nearby at that time.

One VMU will be allright if you only have a few games, but if you're into sports games it's a good idea to have more. I have 7 of them, one of which is a 4X card from sega. That's 10 total, and it's a total pain to figure out which ones have my games.

I have five official Sega VMUs. Two of them I don't even bother to battery up and just use them in the NCAA football game to provide a little screen to choose your plays. Game I like such as Shenmue and Sonic Adventure seem to take up a lot of space, especially if you download the mini-games. I have one aftermarket mega card and one Sega 4X card. I just keep a small notebook in my game room to keep track of which games are on which memory device which elimnates swapping them in and out. Even at that, it's kind of nice to have the memory access at the control pad so it's easy to swap them in and out and scan on the TV for what games are housed there.
I have 4 and one is painted so that I know which it is and the rest stay in the controllers plus have custom vmu screens. The black and white painted one has SA1 SA2 Sonic Shuffle and chao adventure 2 data on it so not a single block is spared. One is for arcade games which generally don't take up much space so I can fit loads of saves on it. One is for RPGs and the other is for miscellaneous console games (Jet Set Radio, Propeller Arena, Rayman, etc.) I'm doing pretty good with that especially since I unlocked the extra 40 blocks with vmu tool.

I have two 4-in-1 type unofficial cards, and a bunch of official VMU's...about 4 or 5 of them. I tend to put games that really take advantage of the little screen on VMU's and games that don't use them for much other than logos, or games that use different asserories like Samba De Amigo in the 4-in-1's.
