n00b burning Dreamcast backups question

Post by Fickieboy »

Hi there. Im sorry if I ask something that has been answered million times before.
I tried seraching in the forum but found nothing.

Thing is : I got my Dreamcast yesterday, and also DOA2, Jet set radio and Capcom vs Snk.
I needed to burn an utopia disc for the JPN DOA and SNKVSC so I Googled for it and etc; after browsing a few pages I found also selfbooting backups and said to myself "hey, do this and you'll never scratch an original". I burnt DOA and it works great, but SNK VS Capcom is bigger than a regular cd-r (+700 mb) . Is there any way to compress isos or whatever for burning backups, or am I screwed?

Thanks in advance.

I don't know what program you are using or how big the actual file is
But if you are using Disk Juggler and if the file isn't like nearing 1 GB in size you just click Overburn in the burn options and that will do it.

SNK VS Capcom is not over 700MB so you don't need to check overburn.
The actual games is 250MB the rest is a dummy file to push the data toward the end of the disc.

hiya Fickieboy , Dreamcast games go by Time not Size........so a Selfboot game might be 800MB but the Time will be under 80Mins therefore perfect for 80Min CD-R.

hope this helps

Oi boys, thats pretty helpful. The iso I downloaded for SNK is actually 704, i got some 650mb cd's around my place, but now that I know that Im giving them a try.

I dont know how people in this forum feels about chaging topics in a thread, but I guess my next question is : what shall I buy next?

Im interested in virtua fighter, altho i dont know if it is a good version or not, and the obvious choices Samba, Space Channel5, Skies of arcadia, Shenmue (hope I find a cheap one for this), etc. Im probably missing a lot of hidden stuff, so, what do you guys recommend? I checked Racket's articles about this already (the survival horror ones and the fighters) but probably someone can bring more titles.

Thanks again everyone

hiya Fickie , VF3 on Dreamcast is terrible i think it uses WinCE from memory. The Arcade version hammers compared to the DC ver.

I recommend getting a 50 pack or 100 pack of Taiyo Yuden 700MB 80min CD-Rs to burn games , also burn at X4 speed as higher rates will eventually destroy your DC GD-Rom Drive.

Some downloaded DC isos require 74min or 80min i recommend just getting a pile of 80min Taiyo's , the Taiyo are good quality CD-R's and run very well with the Dreamcast. For example burn on cheap media and listen to the Drive how loud/slow and how the Drive Motor struggles reading the Data with the Taiyo's the sound from the Drive is tight.

I also recommend getting Official Scene Release rips from Underground Gamer or another site , non Scene Release rips can be problematic.

btw , dont buy CD-R media off of eBay as they will be fake. Find a reputable Online Shop/Retailer to get Taiyo Yuden from.
