GCN discs almost figured out...
Re: GCN discs almost figured out...
If it were just part of the data stream, then ISOs of those discs should be bootable as well, right?

I don't know... Maybe it's something like you'd need a certain program to duplicate it correctly? I don't know.Hatta wrote:If it were just part of the data stream, then ISOs of those discs should be bootable as well, right?

I think the stuff Noise posted was saying that it looks like the stuff on the GCN discs before the datastream can be simulated by adding something to the datastream. So a gamecube .iso would have to be patched to have some added track that simulated the burst they're talking about.Hatta wrote:If it were just part of the data stream, then ISOs of those discs should be bootable as well, right?
I think it was similar on the Dreamcast. Just ripping a Dreamcast game won't allow it to be played on the console with no modification. An extra track has to be added at the beginning of the disc to simulate the "wobble" section on licensed games.

wasn't there something similar to this on PS2? Like you add a fake header that told the console it was a DVD video to kick-start or something?

Whoa, there are modern system's with unlicensed discs! That contain weird tricks to get them to work! I didn't even know that!
Re: GCN discs almost figured out...
An old battle. PS2 HDAdvance, PS1 Gameshark same scenario, unlicensed pressed disc.
Something about boot sector that cannot be produced on a regular CDR.
Dreamcast was the exception due to initial copy protection being the GD-Rom disc size itself.

You didn't paste the URL correctly. It's actually:noiseredux wrote: News via http://www.eurasia.nu/modules.php?na...ticle&sid=2592
modrobert writes: "What first looked like a general lesson in electronics by tmbinc turned out to be GameCube disc related, I should have known. The screen dump from his oscilloscope shows the 'laser mark' from a Datel disc (ultimate cheatcodes), which interestingly enough isn't actually a real laser mark but simply embedded in the datastream according to tmbinc. This is the trick used by Datel to boot their discs (eg. Action Replay) in unmodified GameCube's, now explained in detail. At this point I'm not sure if this leads closer to create bootable discs (as if original) on your own, but he has my full attention from now on. o_O Deja vu Dreamcast! I think you must have copy/pasted from a web page without first resolving it and then copy/paste it.

Re: GCN discs almost figured out...
The guy who wrote the post that noiseredux came across seems to know his stuff. He has a blog at debugmode.de and has come up with lots of technical info on the gamecube as illustrated by this post: http://debugmo.de/2008/11/anatomy-of-an-optical-medium-authentication/. So if this guy thinks it's possible to do something similar to what Datel, he has a lot of credibility in my book. It'll be interesting if anything comes of it.

This is interesting. I have a Fire Emblem disc slowly dying on me because it had some scratches when bought. Twice it's decided it doesn't want to work anymore right when I killed that stage's boss.

Re: GCN discs almost figured out...
So could this work for downloading a GC iso, burning it, and simply putting it in a vanilla GC or Wii???
(FC, AVFC, NES, SFC x2, SNES, N64, GC x2, Wii x2)*(G&W x7, GB, GBpocket, GBASP, DS-L x2)
(GEN, SS x3, DC x3)*(PCE-Duo)*(Xbox:500GB)*(NGCDZ, NGPC)*(PS1, PStwo, PS3:160GB, PSP.3K)
