What Games Should Return to 2D?

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

this topic reminded me of metal slug 3D... what an awful game. Thought I erased that from my brain.

Ecco The Dophin, Sonic defenately needs to return to 2D. Sonic in 3D doesnt really cut it for me cept for sonic world in sonic jam. FF6/3 is my favorate FF game but i still enjoyed 12. Street fighter 4 should be 2D and not 2.5D. Is it me or do people either love or hate the look of the new street fighter and little to no inbetween?

Mortal Kombat, sure I like Deadly Alliance, Deception, but I would like to see it in 2D again.

I thought Ecco the Dolphin was a masterpiece in 3d. Sonic is kind of annoying in 3d but SA1 and 2 were pretty fun games I think it's just that sega needs to work out there stuff. I really want SF4 to be in 2d, it look like crap in 3d to me. Metroid to me is one that needs to be in 2d the most.

It's too early to say on Bionic Commando, but it's a pretty likely candidate.

I totally agree about Final Fantasy. It will never "return" to 2D in the main franchise, but if they could make fresh games on the DS or PSP that are in the same vein as FF 5 or 6, that would be awesome. And it would sell like hot cakes.

Same with Mario. Like someone said, look at New SMB and what a hit that was. My guess: I betcha Nintendo is already cooking up a new 2D mario for WiiWare on the VC. No physical media to manufacture + major nostalgia + big install base = charge $15 or $20 for the download and make tons of money.

SONIC for sure. we can all agree on that. metroid would be nice. i think mario is doing just fine in 3D, and New Super Mario Bros. was a great game in it's own right also. i think RYGAR would be awesome in a new 2D style. i really liked Contra: Shattered Soldier for PS2 (or at least the idea of it, 2D gameplay with fully rendered 3D graphics), and the red star was a cool idea too. take some of the beloved classics from the 16-bit days and do 'em up in that style and i think you'd have a lot of people willing to purchase those games, or at least download them.

I'd like to add Shinobi and Vectorman.
Too bad it will never happen *sigh*

I liked the game myself, but it was highly frustrating very often... Hardly a masterpiece IMO. And perhaps the best levels I played were the 2 sort of hidden 2D levels.

I must have died hundreds of times (literally) in the Skyways level. That is one level that really does NOT work in 3D. At least not with that implementation. Although it was absolutely gorgeous.

They could and perhaps should try to make another 3d Ecco, but with contextual controls or whatever that make controlling it less like a Dolphin sim (or whatever) and allow players to get spectacular stunts with less effort - although I haven't played any of the examples I'm about to give, reputedly the sort of stuff they use in God of War, Gears of War or more recently in Assassin's Creed. I think a 3D Ecco would benefit from that sort of more cinematic approach given by contextual controls.

And before anyone thinks of slamming me, I played the harder version (Dreamcast), collected EVERY vitalit (some of them are very hard*) so it's not I couldn't personally handle the difficulty - but a game shouldn't be such a chore to play. In some ways, it reminded me of Sonic Adventure (the first) - there were parts of the game that were almost pure bliss and you could see there was a brilliant game hiding in there, but many times it was just frustrating due to the controls.

* Particularly the one I got before it was time to do so - in a certain level near the end, there is a vitalit right at the start of it, near a waterfall to make it harder, at a good height above the water. I didn't know the water level was going to rise as I completed some goals, and after some good number of tries I got the thing despite the waterfall and despite the height :P

Yeah thae game is damn hard but so was the one on the genesis. I always figured that it was just me and that the game was of moderate difficulty and that it was just because I grew up with Ecco Jr. instead of the real deal. One thing that really is pissing me off about handhelds recently is the ability to do 3d. I loved the GBA since it was just like getting more snes and genesis games, IMO the GBA Metroid games were the best ever. But now because the nds can handle 3d Metroid Dred will never exist. How long is it before they quit with 2d castlevanias and we have to deal with all the 3d castlevania garbage?
