You mean 5th?
1, 2, 3, zero, code: vernoica, 4

that's 6.
I never really considered Code Veronica part of the main series but that's just me. Still a good game no matter what its place is. :D

in what way are they superior to the original?
did they enhance anything?
From Wikipedia about RE 2:
"The Nintendo GameCube version, released in 2003, is identical to the PlayStation's DualShock Version in terms of content, featuring only a minimal set of improvements such a higher frame rate for the game's FMV sequences."

From Wikipedia about RE 3:
"The Nintendo GameCube version is a direct port of the PlayStation version with no added features other than an increased frame rate for FMV scenes and smoother-looking character models."

This is just speculation, but the load times might be shorter on the GameCube.

load times are way shorter, graphics are a tad smoother (looks more like the dreamcast versions) better frame-rate. Re2 is on one disc.

Not worth if you already have the originals, but if not, you might as well go for the gamecube ones.

EDIT: and Code Veronica is 100 percent part of the main series. Identical gameplay and its story relates directly to previous games. It's not like Dead Aim or Outbreak or something.

I wish Code Veronica was called: RE 4: Code Veronica. It makes sense because it happens after the events in Raccoon City and has zombies. Resident Evil 4 however...

Oh well. I still like Code Veronica but I really couldn't get into the Outbreak games. They felt kind of shallow.

As for silent hilll... I think I have to agree that it was hard to like/play the later ones.
I'm a bigger Silent Hill fan than RE but I can agree. The new games are not even made by the same people and most are just mediocre (except for Shattered Memories; love that game). For me, SH 4 is hard to like as well. When they changed the format for the games the series just went down hill. But that's just my opinion.

Silent Hill 4 was just an interesting experiment gone wrong. Shattered Memories was an interesting experiment gone right.

:D :D :D
I love Shattered Memories. It is the best non-Team Silent game in the series.

Capcom and Konami have suffered greatly with the advent of 7th gen hardware, and consequently failed to deliver new developments in gameplay or storytelling to match the (relatively modest) leap in technical capabilities. Silent Hill has already been outsourced, and it wouldn't hurt for RE to follow the same path, but peronally I'd rather those franchises be replaced by new ones with completely new plots/timelines/characters.

RE4 was a GCN exclusive, then was later ported to PS2. With extra content.

Even when we Cube owners got the good end of the stick, we didn't.
