I grew up with dogs
lots and lots and lots of dogs

throughout my childhood we had about (from that I was 3-16)

*thinking and counting*

about 10-11 dogs

I grew up (partly) on a farm, where most dogs were used as trackers when my foster-father was hunting

I don't know the English name for any of them, apart from the Rodesian Ridgeback (albeit without the ridge, so he was supposed to be put to sleep but we took care of him)

there was a wide variety in the different dogs and I like all of them

although I don't care too much for dogs these days, they have undeniably played a great part in my youth and how I perceive animals

since the dogs at this particular farm were treated as equals, whereas all other animals were treated like shit, I grew to care more for other animals than dogs

I don't mind dogs, nor do I think that they are lesser of a creature

I do however mind people's perception of dogs vs. other animals

but as they say: to each his/her own =)

interesting thread by the way

I don't have dogs of my own, but my parents have 2 dogs that I grew up with. 2 black labs, one 12 (Sadie) and one is 5 (Shadow). Shadow has terrible anxiety issues, so she doesn't like new dogs, but around the people she knows, she is very loving. Sadie's just old. She doesn't really do anything except eat and get pissed off at Shadow

I like dogs but I never ever want to take care of one. Don't want to deal with feeding it, cleaning the floors/furniture of hair, making sure someone takes care of it whenever I go away for more than 10 hours, etc.

My dog Willie is a full blooded yellow lab. He is also a full blooded pain in my ass. He is always getting in trouble, weather it be by eating the cat's food, peeing in the house, getting in the trash, etc. He is a never ending chore, but, I do love him. So much in fact, that I buy him dog treats (milk-bones) for the rare occasion that he is being good. He is a lover. Any time he is around strangers, he is the friendliest dog. But like DS said, the dogs of my childhood won a special place in my heart. We had one Irish setter/lab mix, her name was Harley. She earned her name by being about as fast as a bolt of lightning, and my dad was an avid Harley-Davidson fan back then. The other one was Squeaky, a 22-pound weiner dog that was as sweet as could be. I've been around dogs my whole life, so to not have one would be strange for me.

I'm afraid of dogs. No, I wouldn't be scared of a corgi or a poodle, but I'd try to stay a few steps back from anything the size of a golden retriever. I got mauled by a dog when I was ~7 years old and have been uncomfortable around them ever since. My neighbor has dogs (golden retriever sized or bigger), but they're well-trained so I don't quake in my boots when they're around.
