When I first saw your post I thought it read "Fuck Tom Jones...". For second I thought our e-friendship would be over forever.

I will say that to claim that there is no evidence for the existence of Jesus is kind of ridiculous. I will be happy to discuss this point further if anyone cares.
But my previous couple of comments were not appropriate for respectful discourse, and for that I am sorry.
My comments were probably not needed either to be fair. I understand when I say certain things, even if they are aimed specifically at that person who made those comments, that others will be sensitive to them as well. I meant no offense to you Limewater, I realize that people with different beliefs, or lack of, share this board, so I'll try to word things less antagonistically from now on.
However, I maintain that what I said is the truth.
Re: Mosques
Oh, I assure you, I was not personally offended at all. Were you to say that there is no historical evidence that Jesus was any sort of deity or perform miracles or something, I would not disagree. However, as historical figures of that era go, there is a pretty strong case to be made for the existence of Jesus. We do not have contemporary, extra-biblical sources to confirm his existence, but that's true of a lot of historical figures who people don't claim are made-up. We do, however, have a fair amount of bibical and extra-biblical sources regarding the early Christian church. This provides pretty strong historical support for the existence of Jesus as a religious leader around that time. The Christian church started while there were a load of people alive who would have been contemporary with Christ.Octopod wrote: My comments were probably not needed either to be fair. You don't have to believe he walked on water to accept that there is historical evidence for some guy to have existed and inspired a new cult/sect of Judaism a couple thousand years ago.

This guy mentioned that he didn't get approval from the fire department to have his little display. That's enough to shut down his bonfire.
Re: Mosques
I actually thought there was some evidence that Jesus or a similar figure had existed. I remember watching a History Channel show in which they discussed that there were several figures going around preaching similar messages (and some making similar claims about relations to God), but only Jesus ended up successful. Of course this was several years ago when I saw this, so I might be horribly inaccurate in how I remember it.Limewater wrote:Oh, I assure you, I was not personally offended at all. Re: Mosques
Well either way, the point is that there is more concrete evidence for Muhammad as a historical figure than for Jesus.

I remember one about another messianic figure that was suppose to be a contemporary and was likewise disposed of by the Romans. I can not remember any of the details though.

You are both thinking of this:Ack wrote:I actually thought there was some evidence that Jesus or a similar figure had existed. Re: Mosques
I found these two...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Athronges
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simon_of_Peraea
Also kind of...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dositheos_%28Samaritan%29
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simon_Magus
I do not think any of these are what I was thinking of though.
Edit: I would actually like to discuss Limewaters Jesus is Horus comment but it is really way off topic I guess. Of course so is most of the thread.
