Last time I checked, video and audio encoders weren't taking advantage of multiple cores. For multi-core, I didn't feel an increase in encoding speed, however I don't feel any slowdown while encoding now, which is fantastic. I've literally encoded video while playing the highest end PC games, and I didn't feel much of a difference in the game. It's really nice.racketboy wrote:Well, that essentially answers my question.
a couple extra minutes off encoding time isn't worth it.
How much do you time would a midrange core 2 duo encode 2 hours in?
Would A Jump from 2.4Gz to 3.2Ghz be noticable?

That right there is what you'll notice with the new dual-cores. Not really an increase in speed, but the ability to do multiple things at once much more smoothly.Mozgus wrote:Last time I checked, video and audio encoders weren't taking advantage of multiple cores. If your running Windows Vista, i heard the 2GB is better, anyways 2GB is better if your multi-tasking either way.racketboy wrote:I'm still running my old 2.4Ghz P4 with 800Mhz bus
My my mobo supports a 3.2Ghz chip (actually 3.4 as well, but those are pricier)
Would it be worth upgrading? It looks like I could snag the CPU on eBay for around $60-$70
My machine just gets a little laggy with lots of Flash-based stuff running in Firefox and when converting stuff to xvid and such.
On a side note, I wonder if I'm just better off just picking up a spare P4 machine from work for about $100 for just video processing...
I don't play modern PC games and I'm staying away from Vista.
I guess I'll just make do with what I have -- it's worked for 5 years

Nothing wrong with that, man. I can tell you from experience that keeping up with modern hardware is too expensive, too time consuming, and too stressful. But it's something that's hard to stop once you start. Everytime I buy a new part, its because I was thinking "I'll stop after this. The machine is finished." Then 2 months later, I buy something again.racketboy wrote:I don't play modern PC games and I'm staying away from Vista.

I'm just a hard drive addict.
I have well over a terabyte in my house, and I was just thinking about picking up another 500GB drive.

Then invest in that... you'll notice so much more improvement from that if your not really doing anything to intensive.racketboy wrote:I'm just a hard drive addict.

To tell you the truth I do MOST of my work on the PC in my garage. My bedroom (which is the best PC in the house) is only for gaming, TV recording, and music.
In the garage here I do all my work, like programming, modeling, photoshop shit, typing and everything. I have at any given moment multiple programs running like:
Photoshop, Mental Mill, 3DsMax, Blade3D, Visual C#, WinAmp, OpenOffice, Firefox, and many other...
I do all this on a crap as 1.4Ghz P4 (that thinks it's a 2.8Ghz for some reason), a gig of RAM, and a POS Nvidia Geforce 6600.
Oh and the whole time dual screening.
The only thing that bugs me is how long it takes to initially load any of the programs (i.e. Photoshop)... which in comparison to my better computer in my bedroom doesn't even increase by much time anyways.
