Post by optmusprimenumber »

i'm curious about it... read a lot about it... just wondering if anyone here had done it and if it has any bearing on virtual console functionality. plus, will future updates eliminate the hack? cuz i'm thinkin i might just pick up a second wii if i have to.

It doesn't affect any legit functionality at all.

You can set it up so that you can load Wii/GC/VC/Wiiware all via USB without ever touching your actual Wii NAND at all. You can even play online normally too. (Although really, Wii online..hehe. So much cheating there's really no point.)

How's that for the ultimate in convenience? :p

Backing up Wii games to a harddrive is great, it's incredibly easy to do and is extremely convenient. No more searching for games in storage bins!

One note though: you can't load GC games off an HD because the Wii doesn't recognize the USB ports while in GC mode. You can still back them up to disc though, and that works just fine.

If you preform the softmod and never do an official update again you don't have to worry about losing any homebrew functionality. Nintendo won't be able to tell that your running a modified console even if you play online/use the shop/use Wiiconnect24.

After you modify the console you should update system files manually which isn't that hard to do or sometimes not needed at all. The most common update you'll probably end up running is for the shop channel, which is as simple as running some homebrew software and pressing a few buttons.

Be aware that some games will not run properly from the HDD if you use a usb loader. These are rare and there is usually a work around.

Edit: your number one concern is bricking the console which should never happen if your follow instructions correctly. So read twice and ask if your unsure about something.

I'd definitely recommend doing it. USBLoader GX is awesome.

Here's a video I made of it in action:

It loads really quickly, whether or not it's faster than direct from disc I couldn't tell you, it feels faster but then again the Wii loads games extremely quick from disc anyway. The interface is lovely and smooth, and you can customise everything, you can even put your own covers into it if you were so inclined. I just choose to download them automatically when I install a game.

I have a custom background music that I made from the Zelda OOT shop music. If you like it I can upload the file and you can use it on your USB Loader. Every time you load up USBLGX you'll think you're back in Hyrule perusing the items for sale (just don't smash the pots please!).

 to the zelda shop tune... that's good stuff. but thanks anyway, i'll probably not be getting any deeper into it than the walkthrough will take me... i'll be happy that it works in the first place. but, again thanks anyway.

Just don't try to play Monster Hunter 3 online. Capcom monitors people with modded Wii's. They really don't want people cheating on their game.
