I guess that's really the question we all have to ask ourselves isn't it? I'd definitely strongly consider the S-NES, but I'd probably go with the Dreamcast, with the Saturn being a very close runner upphillyman wrote:
If I were trapped on a island , and I could only take 1 console with every game made for that console......I would pick the SNES and its entire game lineup

I bought a previously owned Master System way back when, played the meager collection of games that came with it for a few months, sold it to my sister for a few quid and bought a nearly new Mega Drive with Flashback. Instant fanboy. Never looked at another console until the PS1 came out, and I crossed to the dark side. A couple of years ago my wife picked me up a cheap Dreamcast and a couple of games (Sonic Adventure!) and there I was, a Sega fanboy again. Since then I've spent a lot of time (and far too much money!) expanding the Sega collection. Nowadays I buy pretty much whatever catches my eye, but Sega rules them all.
I guess I'd have to say I was and still am a Sega Fanboy. I wanted a Genesis because my older brother, the REAL techno geek, said it was the best. And this was when we were young adults not kids! Anyway, because of his furvor I wanted and got a Genesis and became consumed by gaming. I took everything Sega put out including the Sega CD, 32X, Saturn and Game Gear. I will have to admit that the Sega Visions magazine was helpful in driving my Sega obsession. I probably own 75 Genesis games, 60 Saturn games, 40 Sega CD games and closing in on owning ALL the 32X games. I had sold off my Game Gear collection some time ago but I've recently rebuilt it and have multiple systems and about 40 games and plenty of accessories. I still kick myself for not buying a Nomad when they were new and I'd still like to have a Nomad and a CDX in my collection.
One of the most painful moments in my gaming life was when the Playstation came out. I was happy with my Saturn but it was clearly not the dominent system even though I thought it was, or at least could be, superior to the Playstation. When Tomb Raider was released it was not available on the Saturn even though it was later ported to the Saturn. I wanted Tomb Raider so very bad it compelled me to cross the fanboy lines and make a deal with the devil. I honestly did actually feel guilty for buying a Playstation, like I was cheating on my wife or something. Of course it was worth it as Tomb Raider was even better than they hype around it said and it drew me back into gaming even more.
I played both systems but eventually the Saturn dwindled and the Playstation just grew stronger and stronger and then the Playstation 2 exploded on the scene. By then I was a big fan of the PS family and though I wanted a Dreamcast it was pretty clear it was not going to survive. I was never a first-adoptor so I could wait and see how things performed. The PS2 seemed to be the only one to have real long life ahead so I did not get a Dreamcast at that time. I've never liked the XBox or 360 with similar feelings towards them as I felt years ago as a Genesis geek toward anything starting with "N".
Lingering feelings of guilt and the fact that I'm financially better off now combined many years later, about 2 years ago, to compel me to buy my first Dreamcast. This set off a torrent of retro game and system collecting, an affliction of which I still am suffering. While I am a big fan of the Playstation family, it has NEVER had the personality of Sega. I've yet to step up to the PS3 because I just don't yet see a compelling reason to do so, I've not seen a Tomb Raider-like motivation to do so at least. Plus it's just too damned expensive.
Back in my Genesis days I couldn't afford to own multiple systems so I never ever even thought of going Nintendo though I had friends who really liked Zelda and Mario and from their stories they sounded complelling, just never enough so to make me buy a system. The N64 and GameCube never appealed to me at all but I must admit the Wii does look compelling and I'd probably own one if they could be found in retail stores. Do they ALL get purchaced by money grubbing jerks to be sold on ebay for a huge profit?
But my first and truest love is Sega. I still have all my original vintage systems and games and continue to collect systems, peripherals and games.

I suppose my first was my parent's commodore 64. played that until someone gave us an atari. Then that broke. We got an nes for Christmas one year and my dad's girlfriend had a shit ton of games for it. No one else that we knew had anything other than nintendo, consoles and handhelds alike. The first sega I saw was a gamegear, but the battery life was so crappy that I never got a turn to use it. My parents also got us an n64 when that came out.
I've gotten into sega a great deal since I've started collecting. Sega seems to be easier to collect and get on the cheap. My DC was $5, so was 1 genny, the other genny's were $1 and some change for the controllers and hookups. I'm sprawled out now, but I was kind of forced into nintendo fandom by my parents and surroundings back in the day...

My first console was a nes which was soon followed by a gameboy. I had a few good games for both but was never a nintendo fanboy. When the Genesis model 2 came out with Sonic 2 pack in I instantly became a Sega fanboy. My nes barely got any play, gb got some play when I was away. It was mainly my genesis that I played. Plus I was a fan of the sonic tv shows. Up until around 1999 I ownly owned 2 games Sonic 2 and Dr Robotnics Mean Bean machine as I wasnt able to afford any others and then bought a dreamcast. From then on I have purchased every other Sega console to date save the master system (have a power base converter). I even own a Nomad, gamegear and CDX. I love Sega and will never part with any of my consoles. I own a copy of every 16bit sonic game and up for sega systems (which is not that hard). I have a little money aside just in case sega releases a new console.
I think you answered your own question! hahaScooter wrote:A real question to test the mettle of the so-called Sega Fanboys here: do you have any Sonic plush dolls? I have one that says SEGA! when you squeeze his tummy and I also have Tails and Knuckles plushes. Or is that just gay?
i did buy Nintendo cereal though...
Nintendo...It for breakfast NOW!
Nintendo...It's a cereal, WOW!
What a lame song for a terrible cereal.

My first three pieces of hardware were the NES, Game Boy and SNES and I just seemed to like the games N put out. Zelda, Mario, Starfox, plus a lot of the great third party games by Capcom, Konami and Squaresoft. In the 80s and early 90s, N systems just had more, better games IMO. Also, I never was into sports games (and still don't play them) so that aspect of the Genesis never appealed to me at all.
I will admit I bought into the tech hype about SNES being better than Genesis back then, what with Mode 7, more colors, scaling and all that. So I was all about Big N.
However I crossed over when the PS1 came out. Never owned an N64, and I only got a GameCube in 2003 to play Metroid and Zelda. I love my DS, too.
But nowadays I'm just a fan of good games, period. It's really weird because I found myself rooting for Nintendo again with the start of the Wii craze. They were showing that it's all about fun again and I liked that. But now I just don't think most of the stuff on Wii even looks very fun and I find myself almost rooting against them so that we're not all doomed to play whack-a-mole mini games and yoga games for the rest of our lives.
