Changing Playstation laser

Post by Hateshinai »

I have two Playstations (original, not PSOne) with dying CD Drives and decided to change them. One question: do the different models have different drives or are they all the same? I couldn't find anything helpful online.

The drive assembly is essentially the same however they do have different cable lengths which may mean that one laser will fit one unit but not another, so you will need to make sure that the laser you are buying is made for the unit it's going in.

Thanks. I'll just open them up and see what laser types I need.

You can always buy an extension for the CD ribbon.
I have used a PSone [101] laser on a PSX [1001]

Really? Cool, I didn't know they existed. Do you have a link to where they can be bought from?

Dude, I've seen original PlayStations selling as cheap as $5 for a console alone. Are you sure it's really worth the cash to replace that laser?

I need some more help. I opened the consoles to check the laser models but one of them is not labeled. I need to know which laser model is used on SCPH-5552. I can't find anything online. Does anyone know?

you need to take the laser assembly apart.
It's on the bottom of the actual laser.
