Closing in on a collecting goal: to have all Sega 32X games

I was a fairly early adopter of the Sega 32X when it first came out. Well, I bought it after the first price drop but that wasn't long after it's initial release! I honestly didn't ever feel like a sucker since I did find quite a few games I liked for the system. I can still rememer sitting in my car after the purchase wondering how I was going to get through the rest of the week until payday! If I recall correctly, I also got a couple of games at the same time and got a few more through one of Sega's infamous rebate offers.

Anyway, of all the systems I've owned or still own, the 32X is the only system for which I could ever hope to collect all the games which were commercially available. I had a pretty good collection from back in the day of all the games I really wanted but over the past few years I would pick up any additional games if I found them in good shape with a nice box, cart and instructions even if the games themselves weren't of immediate appeal. In this instance I didn't mind collecting the games even if I didn't play them very much since it seems no one else wanted them. There are a few real stinkers in the list so I'm probably doing someone else a favor by keeping them off the market!

As of this past Sunday when I found four excellent games at a local used game store, I am now just a few games away from completing my collection. This includes all of the 32X/Sega CD games which I've had for years. Night Trap never really caught my attention and neither did Slam City, but I will admit that I do rather like Corpse Killer, I guess I'm weird. But Blackthorne, Virtua Racing Deluxe, Virtua Fighter, Star Wars, Shadow Squadron and Doom all got a great deal of game play, especially prior to me getting my Saturn and later my PS1.

Anyway, wish me luck in locating the last few games I need! I'm not counting Darxide in my needs list since it was never a US release and of course since it is impossibly hard to find and costs big bucks even though I'd truly like to see what it is like. I don't think I could play it on my US system anyway so I guess I'm off the hook on that one. I guess I'm also excluding other Japan-only and EU-only releases and focusing only on the US versions.

What U.S. ones are you missing? We could keep and eye out for you! I've got something like 18 32X games. How many ever came out?

I'm look for complete games with a nice box and instructions included. A couple of these remaining games should be pretty easy to find such as After Burner, Mortal Kombat II, Toughman, but a few of the others like Pitfall and Brutal seem a little harder to find.

Does anyone ever have any luck finding games at the Goodwill or other thrift stores? I've never had much luck there, but there are a number of Goodwills conveniently close to me.

I dunno, I rarely paid full retail back in the day since I always shopped for sales. I think the 32X was already in the discount bins by then. I probably paid $40-$50 for it new. This was back when the game was actually released so it doesn't really compare to current prices of things. I do remember the game getting some hype and that it was hard to find, probably as much because the 32X was already on the way out as that they just didn't make that many copies. I remember that the game itself wasn't, for me, a "gotta have", but there were few choices for 32X games and I knew there wouldn't be any more and I was still trying to justify having bought the system in the first place by having as many games as possible that appealled to me even a little bit.

Is it really that rare? My recent searches for Pitfall, Brutal and WS Baseball put those in the $40-$50 range which seems like a lot for a nearly 15 year old game. Well that, and that I'm a bargain shopper so it ticks me off I can't find them as bargains! I've pretty much cleaned out the local used games stores in two cities of anything older that is on my seeking list for all things Sega. Not many fresh arrivals of this old stuff show up any more and the newer used game stores just don't have this oldy-moldy inventory of retro games. On-line is pretty much useless, at least in my experience, outside of ebay, Amazon and Half.com. Any other shopping sources for this stuff anyone can suggest would be appreciated.
