Ok I have messed with some chipped xboxs, some damaged xboxs, and everything in between.
BUT, I can NOT figure out how to upgrade the harddrive in a softmodded system. Every bit of forum info I find is written several years ago, and well thats great...but time to time I ran across people having my issue.
I goto make my linux cd...it works, I hit 1...it searchs and searchs and then says linux cd not found. well...my dvd drive ONLY has sata, NO ide, and alot of people seem to be having the same issue.
Does ANYONE know a way around there? a more up to date software? a way to boot linux without using a cd? a hot swap trick where I can just slam the files onto the drive? anything?

original xbox question
Yep, I know im the one ya love to hate.
Re: original xbox question
I hate softmods when it comes to xbox.
I always prep the HDD in a modded xbox[1] using AutoInstallerDelux
I install a chip on the xbox[2] that needs to be softmodded
Install prep HDD in xbox[2]
DUOX2 has an option to lock and unlock the HDD
Lock HDD [2]
Remove chip [2]
Now HDD is locked to xbox [2] and will boot softmod.

Re: original xbox question
I wish I had some advice for you. All I can add is my agreement in that finding up to date information for that sort of thing is a huge pain in the ass. I went with a hard mod on my xbox just because it was so hard to get reliable information.
Re: original xbox question
A quick google tells me that there's a USB key port of XboxHDM. I haven't tried it myself though.

Re: original xbox question
You can do it solely on the softmodded Xbox with some jiggering. I'll paste my v1.6 Xbox instructions here -- it's a pain to do on 1.6 because you won't be able to see the screen properly. However if you're doing it on v1.0 to 1.5, you can see the screen and follow along no problem. It looks like a lot of steps, but I listed out everything. In reality it only takes about 20 minutes. I've done this so many times I can do it in my sleep!
Without further ado, here is as modern of a guide as you can get:
Materials Required
:: Softmodded Xbox;
:: Large IDE HDD or SATA HDD with appropriate SATA-IDE adapter;
:: Power Cable Y-Adapter / Power source for additional drive;
:: 1 Computer w/Telnet software;
:: DHCP range on the router should be set to 192.168.0.2 - 192.168.0.199;
Instructions
01. Turn on the Xbox.
02. Using the EvolutionX or UnleashX dash, set the Xbox IP address to something > 192.168.0.4.
03. Turn off the Xbox.
04. Open the Xbox.
05. Set the original Xbox HDD jumper to 'Master' or 'Master with Slave'.
06. Set the new Xbox HDD jumper to 'Slave'.
07. Slightly remove the ribbon cable from the DVD-ROM. (If the Xbox doesn't boot, you removed it too much.)
08. Turn on the Xbox. At your EvolutionX or UnleashX dash, pull the ribbon cable from the DVD-ROM and plug it into your new larger hard drive.
09. Using the Y-Adapter, run power to both HDDs, or power the additional drive via an external source.
10. Run Chimp via the EvolutionX or UnleashX dash, NOT XBMC.
11. The screen will garble/go off. This is OK, the software is still running.
12. Open a command prompt on your computer.
13. Type 'telnet 192.168.0.3' and press enter.
14. Username is 'root', password is 'xbox'.
15. Press '1', and then 'Enter'.
16. Press Enter for 'Yes'.
17. When it's finished scanning, press 'Enter' to return to the main menu.
18. Press '2', and then 'Enter'.
19.Press Enter for 'Yes'.
20. After the scan, press 'Enter'.
21. You will be prompted to wipe out and reformat the new hard drive. Press 'left arrow', and then 'Enter'.
22. Press 'Enter' for Full Disk.
23. Press 'Enter' for Blind.
24. The C: and E: drives will be listed. Press 'Enter'.
25. When the drive has finished cloning, it will return to the main menu automatically.
26. Press '3' (Lock Slave), and then 'Enter'.
27. Press '1' (From Motherboard), and then 'Enter'.
28. Password generated from motherboard, choose 'Yes' by pressing 'left arrow', and then 'Enter'.
29. When it says 'Done', press 'Enter' to return to the main menu.
30. Press '6' (Exit) and then close the Command Prompt.
31. Turn off the Xbox.
32. Remove the old hard drive.
33. Set the jumper on the new hard drive to 'CS' (Cable Select).
34. Reconnect all the cables, and reassemble the Xbox.
Hope that helps you out!
There are other methods to get this done:
:: If you have a chipped xbox, you can create the larger drive in it and transfer it over;
:: If you have an older (Pentium 3-era) PC, you can do it with the PC via XBOXHDM.
There are plenty of options, but I personally find Chimp the easiest, as all you need is a y-splitter/power source for your second drive, and it's all self contained.

Re: original xbox question
I tried to mess with the usb setup, but could not get my pc to boot via usb no matter what I tried. The idea behind it sounds great, if it would boot properly.
I have tried using chimp but due to how this network is setup and my not being able to change ANYTHING without someone kicking my ass...telnet is out, though that was something that I tried for a few hours.
Now here is the killer, the harddrive I am trying to put in this softmod is from my hardmod. Why do you ask? Well....the mod chip in the hardmod xbox requires a special dongle to do the bios, this is one I got as a "busted" modded xbox, well I got it working but the bios are VERY unstable, and I do NOT have the cable to reflash them. I thought about trying to do them a different way but I have NO idea what this chip is. There is no name on it, no signs to make me think anything, only thing that stands out...is this
thats on one end of the chip...a smile, a smile that screams you fail at life, and you wont be using MY harddrive.
I would rather keep the chipped xbox, just due for the fact it has alot of arcade games on it that we have been playing..when I can make it boot and stay on.
But reguardless, the main thing is trying to do this swap just to have a stable console and not a time bomb.
Now I MIGHT could get a old computer and try to do the linux trick again, BUT, I have to go way out my way to get one and from my understanding its not a 100% sure thing to work.
Thanks for all the help guys, if anyone knows of any other interesting tricks please let me know.
*ps, does it REALLY matter with the linux cd if you have 1 or 2 ide slots? I just want to make sure I am understanding that correctly.*

Re: original xbox question
Get a crossover cable and connect your computer directly to the Xbox. You can set up the network however you need then.lost_within wrote: I have tried using chimp but due to how this network is setup and my not being able to change ANYTHING without someone kicking my ass...telnet is out, though that was something that I tried for a few hours.
