I had been under the impression that Seaman was a Japan-only release. Am I wrong?Original_Name wrote:Seaman utilizes video games' unique inherent abilities to create an artistic expression perhaps more directly than any other video game. Video games are a medium which by definition break the fourth wall, but Seaman absolutely obliterates the fourth wall and pounds the rubble into a sub-atomic state. Seaman does not just make broad, sweeping generalizations and assumptions about its audience; it takes what YOU say directly and makes judgments about you. They're smart, quirky, funny, and most importantly, they'll really make you think about yourself. The moral of Seaman? As weird as you think a "person" from a different "culture" is, they think you're just as strange. Important stuff.
Oh, and try telling him that he doesn't exist. I did that at the age of 10, and it remains, to this day, the most important thing that a video game has ever done to me.

Yep, there was a North American release on the DC.
You might be thinking of the PS2 release which was JPN only.

Thanks for mentioning De Blob has a free PC download! I'll make use of that first and if I like it then grab the Wii version (what can I say, I'm a sucker for physical media).J T wrote: Before you go spending money on that for Wii, it's free on PC.
Also, I will add one more to the mix: Zeno Clash
Zeno Clash does look really cool from what I've seen so far. I have a buddy who is always talking about it so it's surprising that it wasn't already something I'd played. Either way, gonna be looking even more into it now.
Do you need the microphone to play Odama? I have the game but no mic to use in conjunction with it...slowslow325 wrote:Odama for GameCube. It's not as much weird in the graphics/story department (well, it is a little) but the gameplay is pretty weird. Pinball + Real Time Strategy = Odama
Custer's Revenge for Atari 2600. It gets a lot of complaints, but it's not such a bad game. I've found myself enjoying it. Even if you don't like the gameplay, you'll still get a cheap, immature laugh. I suggest emulation, it gets kinda expensive.
Super Mario Bros. for NES. This one is pretty weird. You are a plumber, you go around slamming your head on blocks to find mushrooms. You then eat the 'shrooms to get bigger. Throughout this journey you will be jumping on turtles and mushroom shaped creatures to defeat the biggest turtle of them all. After you do this, you meat up with "Toad" who is a mushroom. He tells you the princess you're trying to find isn't in this castle. So you move on to the next world.
Haha, Custer's Revenge. One of my guilty pleasures is playing silly old school "adult" games. I guess Custer's Revenge is alright and I really wish I could have picked up this in the box copy of it I saw a while ago... but it was $100 and I couldn't commit to that for a novelty.
Now that you mention it the entire realm of Mario is pretty trippy. I've never viewed it that way though... I wonder why that is. I should play through Super Mario World and Super Mario RPG already. With these ideas of how truly strange the realm is, I think that'll make it much more interesting.
Typing of the Dead is fabulous. I tried playing it once at the arcade and unfortunately didn't do too well... However that was because my friend and I were playing it on a Japanese machine with the game simply translating the Japanese characters into English letters (but still saying very long Japanese words). Whoops.Para wrote:Typing of the Dead is one of the weirdest game concepts ever but its fairly well known.
Earthworm Jim same thing. Very well known but also very wacky and awesome.
Base Wars Baseball isn't that unsual, except when its robots playing baseball! Plays a lot like most of the baseball games on the NES except it stars robots instead of human players. Also you get to kill each other if you get tagged on a base. It's pretty fun.
Speaking of that game, has anyone here played Total Distortion? It's a PC game where you fight against some... evil guys with your guitar. You press the keyboard to play the guitar as you battle your enemies. I'm not sure how good it actually is, but I enjoyed it when I was younger.
Earthworm Jim is a great recommendation! I need to get some version of the game and get to it. Vectorman has a similar feel to me, but certainly not the same.
Base Wars quite frankly sounds awesome. I've never been a huge fan of baseball but a few times games on the sport captivate me. Things like Mutant League Football ... anything that makes sports games more interesting are worth a look.
Now why haven't I heard other people saying this?! Damn, I'm totally going to hold off on MadWorld for a lot longer now knowing that I very well might not be missing anything by not playing it. I've got games I know I'll be all about anyhow, so it's no great loss.dsheinem wrote:MadWorld is a horrible horrible game that you should not buy. Not even for $5. It has one redeeming feature - a cool style - but even that isn't executed as well as it looks like it is in screenshots. Avoid at all costs.
HOTD Overkill is one of the best Wii games, period.
And in regards to Seaman the PS2 version had a caveman or something instead, right? That's somehow less cute than Seaman, even though Seaman himself certainly wouldn't win any beauty contests.
Re: Recommendations for strange/unusual games?
I didn't find anything that great about madworld. Got it for $9 brand new thankfully. The 2 colors + blood look gets a little busy at times. I haven't gotten that far but it feels like a bunch of quicktime animations strung together by button mashing. It actually feels less interactive than old two button beat em ups.
Re: Recommendations for strange/unusual games?
Odama does need a microphone. You issue orders to your troops while you use the joystick for the pinball elements. I played it for the first time today actually. Great game. Really hard though. I couldn't complete the first level, even after about 10 tries.

Yeah, this is how I felt about it as well. It got so boring and repetitious - and in a damn hurry, too.dsheinem wrote:MadWorld is a horrible horrible game that you should not buy. Not even for $5. Well hell, you might like it. I remember being the only person I knew that didn't like it while it was still the hot new thing.GSZX1337 wrote:*hears about Madworld sucking*
