Anybody else remember the Battle Arena Toshinden series?

Post by Gamerforlife »

The only one I ever played was Toshinden 2 on the PS1, but it was a lot of fun. I've noticed that gamers have pretty much forgotten the Toshinden games and nobody mentions them when discussing great 3-d fighters on the PS 1. Maybe I'm in the minority, but I loved Toshinden 2. It had a simple, but fun combo system, awesome over the top special attacks, and wacky characters. It had a great soundtrack too, and I loved those awesome desperation attacks you could pull off when near death. I had good times with that game, and I think it's one of the PS 1's forgotten gems.

Did anybody else enjoy this game?

I remember, but I can't say I enjoyed it too much as I never got much into 3D fighters.

Once Soul Blade came out, Toshinden vanished. Rightfully so, too.

I never played the PlayStation ones, but I do have both for the Saturn; Japanese versions. Simple - yet pretty fun games - for some reason reminded me of Soul Calibur when I first played.

I have the Saturn one (remix), but only because the voice acting makes me piss myself with laughter. Otherwise the series has aged badly, like a lot of early 32-bit stuff.

I had heard that this version was not as good as its PS 1 counterpart.

Well I went and pulled out Battle Arena Toshinden 2 and played it a bit and honestly, I still think its fun. It's definitely been outdone by the Tekkens, Virtua Fighters, etc, etc,but it's a decent game and was actually a great game for its time.

Maybe it's just nostalgia talking. I really can't forgive the cheesy FMV intro though. Even my nostalgia couldn't save that

I have a very fond and very specific memory of this one. But I know it's pure nostalgia and I wouldn't even want to play it today.

I knew a spoiled kid in high school who was the first to get everything (I think many of us knew someone like that) and he got a PS1 at launch with Ridge Racer and BAT and some other games. When I played RR and Toshinden, I was blown away by the graphics and instantly fell in love with the PlayStation. Six months later I bought the console and seven games from him for $200.

The game was awful when it came out and has shown its true colors as it has aged. People at my school preferred it to Virtua Fighter on the Saturn even though VF was a much better game. Pretty colors went to their heads.

I only ever played the GB version, but I liked it, the storylines were pretty funny even though I hardly remember any
