Is it happening?
I was thinking to myself that I need CD-R's to rip Dreamcast games, and thinking about it I thought. Wait a minute, nothing any more uses CD-R really.
*at 700 MB storage, its a joke at this age and era to store stuff on it. It might not be able to take one movie.
*All newer consoles use DVDs, what new games are sold on CD-R's?
*I think music albums are still released on CD's , but I got a feeling that most people use USBs, hard-drives, and ipods to store music. Not to mention , I hear you can store music on DVD's by the thousands and it still can be played on your cd player.
*I think the CD-R was invented in 1984, that makes it 26 year old. Isn't that about the age of the VHS when it died?
What do you think will happen to CD-Rs?
No More CD-R
No More CD-R

Re: Death of the CD-R
He's not kidding when he says this. I walked in to a Walgreens the other day, they were still selling blank VHS's and blank cassette tapes. CASSETTES FOR GOD'S SAKE.
So yeah. I don't CD-R's are going anywhere for as long as cars still have CD Players. Now if cars of the future come built in with a 1 TB HDD and a USB connection cord with optional charge package, that's when I'll say that CD-Rs are gone. But until then, I know I'll still use them.

Collects promo gaming stuff, certain import games, hockey memorabilia, and other oddball things. (sig and avy under construction)

Interesting question worthy of a case study.
I wonder if they are already being phased out. I can't remember the last time I bought a CD for data usage.
Whoa. CD's are getting to be like our parent's 8-tracks.

I burn CDRs constantly for my car. Since I don't have an AUX-IN on my car stereo. When I get bored of an album I'll burn another and pop it on. I've got hundreds of CDRs in my car. Without CDRs I'd have to get a new car which I'm not prepared to do. That's pretty much all I use them for aside from the odd CD based game.

In all fairness, I saw brand new, in cellophane, blank/recordable 8-track tapes in a store last week.
But CD-Rs? I needed them to burn copies of a demo, went to Target and they had ONE kind. Not one brand, but one single package of fifty discs to chose from. No other options. However, DVD-Rs were all over the place.
Re: Death of the CD-R
I'm an avid fan of CD's over digital music. Rarely does it happen these days, but if a band I like puts out a new album you bet your ass I'll be going down to a store to buy the CD. This is actually something I've been pondering, and worrying about, myself for a few years now. I would hate to see CDs go away.

Re: Death of the CD-R
They'll probably still sell them, of course, but not many people will use them. How many people actually use them now? There still may be quite a lot, but it's a lot less, and it's mostly used for obscure stuff (burning dreamcast games, etc.) or possibly to listen to music in your car.
Also, most car stereos now have an Auxilary port. Now that I think about, it should be more commonplace than it is. I mean, the equipment is in the car, they probably just really need to add the extra wire.

Radio Shack.
It sells lots of stuff, including cassette tapes.
SO no, CD-R's aren't going down without a fight.

Re: Death of the CD-R
I still get vinyl. I got a great collection of 8 tracks and reel to reels. I love cassettes, and cd's. Nothing like listening to Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly, The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, etc on thier original format.
