A little assistance.
Re: A little assistance.
Will definitely look into these. Also do check my Backloggery to see what I've already got maybe that could help.

I noticed the 2 Lunar games aren't mentioned. Those are probably my 2 favorite (or at least both in the top 5) RPGs for any system. I know they aren't super cheap, but they are absolutely worth the asking price. Plus, if you don't want the extras that come with them, you can probably shave a few bucks off the price.
For reference, they are called
Lunar - Silver Star Story
Lunar - Eternal Blue
As an aside, don't bother with the DS Lunar. It's undeserving of the title

I can't say I played more than a few minutes of it - It seemed like a decent remake, though given the chance I'd still play the original. (Well, technically the original is on the Sega CD. I like the ps1 versions the best, in any case). The lack of a free roaming world map also made me sadCDink wrote:What about the PSP port?dlmvii wrote:I noticed the 2 Lunar games aren't mentioned. Re: A little assistance.
Ok, I've looked over your Backloggery for PS2 games, and I see you've got some good titles to start an RPG collection with. The Kingdom Hearts series, two Final Fantasies, Persona FES and Persona 4, Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne, and Wild Arms 3. Cool beans, you've already got some of the best starting titles in my opinion and have delved a little deeper into the MegaTen series. So here's a few more for you:
Turn Based:
Xenosaga 1, 2, 3
Ephemeral Fantasia
Atelier Iris 1, 2, 3
Romancing SaGa
Strategy RPG:
Makai Kingdom
Front Mission 4
Roguelike:
Nightmare of Druaga: Fushigino Dungeon
Unsure of how to describe it:
Unlimited SaGa
And of course there's tons of other titles out there, such as the two Arc the Lad titles, the Ar tonelico games, Magna Carta, multiple Suikoden games, and both Tales of Legendia and Tales of the Abyss. A good chunk of these titles are really cheap right now, though a few (like the Ar tonelico games and Tales of the Abyss) fetch a higher price.

Re: A little assistance.
I think most would say that since Working Designs didn't do the localization you should just skip the PSP remakes. Me personally, I haven't played em so no idea.
If you like large parties, Chrono Cross might be a good pick. Breath of Fire III is also top notch, tho I prefer the second game (you can get it on the GBA and play it on your DS). Speaking of DS games, there's Dragon Quest IV & V. Haven't played IX yet tho.
For the PS2 I'd recommend Shadow Hearts and Shadow Hearts Covenant. They both have a decent amount of party members and a great storyline. I'm partial to the first one, but the battle engine is a bit improved in the second. You might also want to look into Koudelka on the PS1 as it's a bit of a prequel. I loved the story and characters, but it does have some pretty big flaws that keep it from being a must-own. Breakable weapons and a slow battle engine just about kill the enjoyment, imo.
Sakura Wars is a recent release that should definitely be in your library. You get a nice large group of characters and a very fun turn-based battle engine. It's a strategy-RPG, but they really streamlined the battle system to be fast, furious and fun as hell. I wasn't expecting much from it beyond some cute dating sim with strategy battles thrown in, but I was pleasantly surprised by what the game offers. Nothing feels thrown together here.
I'd also say pick up Dragon Warrior VII & DQ VIII. They're both excellent, tho in different respects. You'll spend a ton of time in DWVII (if you get into it), but I'll warn you the game isn't for everyone. There aren't a ton of party members either, so it doesn't fulfill that requirement, but it's got a cool storyline and concept behind it, and the game feels a bit episodic in the way it's laid out. It's also a fairly dark story that spends a lot of time examining the uglier side of human nature. And while there are only three party members in the game, you'll spend a long time getting to know them and will really feel like you've stepped into their world. DQ8 on the other hand is quite a bit lighter in tone, tho the main story has some very tender, heartbreaking moments. Really, it comes down to the interactions between your characters, and that's what really drives this game. My big complaint, tho, is that the balance is a bit off (easy for most of the game, but the last boss is a real pain) and that a lot of the systems in it require strategy guides or a ton of trial and error (like the mixing pot or whatever it's called). Some of it I just don't even see how you'd find out on your own without a guide.
If you love having a huge party and a huge cast of characters, why not try the Suikoden series? I can personally vouch for the first three games as being some of the best RPGs I've ever played. The third game might be a good place to start since it's cheap and pretty easy to get into, but I personally consider the second to be the best one. All of them have their strengths and weaknesses, tho. I really love the Roshomon-style storyline in III, for instance.

Re: A little assistance.
I played the original Suikoden and loved it, still love it. I haven't played any other ones, but I have the most interest in the second one. People ask for a lot of money for the US one, and I'm not confident enough in my Japanese to buy the very inexpensive Japanese one. In what ways is it better than the first one to you? Does it continue from the first one, character and story wise? Guess I'm just kind of looking for the lowdown on this game.mobiusclimber wrote:The third game might be a good place to start since it's cheap and pretty easy to get into, but I personally consider the second to be the best one.
Re: A little assistance.
I think that, although III is good in it's own right, the first 2 are the best (With II being the best of the series). The don't really tie into each other much (some vague references to each other's events, but not really much). The second one plays a lot like the first, but it's much longer, and really did everything better than #1. As for the ps2 entries, 3 and 5 are good. Avoid 4. Haven't played tactics, so I can't really comment.brunoafh wrote:I played the original Suikoden and loved it, still love it. Re: A little assistance.
Thanks guys! and thanks Ack for the props on my library already.
Anyway I appreciate these obscure titles mostly, because i hadn't heard of them..therefore how can I plan to buy them! How are the other megaten games...devil survivor and digital devil saga...also I don't have a DS, so that prolly changes things. and is valkyria profile worth the price?
I really enjoyed the gameplay of Rougue Galaxy and Kingdom Hearts..are there other RPG's that do this well? Like for example I want to spend 100 bucks or so on some new RPGs to play..what would you suggest be my priorities for the kinds of games i'm looking for.
