Just a few hours ago I was thinking about the Xbox Live version of the original Sonic the Hedgehog game. Although its not much of a big deal, I'm interested to know if this game was optimized for HD or if there were any other changes made to the game.
This then got me thinking about all of the other Sonic ports out there; Sega Genesis Collection/Sonic Plus/GBA/Mobile Phones/Master System/Virtual Console etc. It sounds strange but I'm interested in finding out what the subtle differences are. Considering the high number of Sega fans on the boards I figured that some of you guys might be able to answer my question.

And everybody thought Blast Processing was a joke...Mozgus wrote:There's something about the Genesis that can never seem to be replicated in any emulation. None of the later sonic ports compare to the original Genesis versions. There always seems to be something odd with the music or sounds or motion.

even though, like Mozgus said (and he and I actually talked about this before)... compare the SFX from the Sonic Jam pack to that of the real genny. They just sound "weird".GagaMan wrote:The Sega Saturn (Sonic Jam) versions of the main Sonic 16-bit games are still the ultimate version. Nothing since has even come close.
I also notice strange palette issues on some of the bad guys (only slight) and animation screw ups.
I agree with Mozgus, for some reason they can't be ported perfectly... damn close at times, but there's just stuff that gets lost.
sound (biggest issue I've noticed)
sprite bugs (colour palette and animations)
flickering
speed... yes speed, the speed just never feels right on emulated versions. Usually it feels like Sonic is just more sluggish... I even notice this in the PC version of Sonic CD!
Oh and the BIGGEST issue for me personally. Controls... the feel of the genny controller just can't be matched... not even the Saturn controller feels right. It has the same lay out, but the slight change in shape and also a more light weight feel just throws me off. Give me a Genny 6 button any day and I'll blow through any Sonic. Give me Sonic Jam and a Saturn controller I falter left and right.
