I recently bought a bundle of Saturn games (mostly shooters) and in it was Street fighter Alpha Zero 3. I've never played a street fighter game before but after playing the other game in the bundle to death, i decided to give it a go.
Honestly i just dont understand the game. If i play almost any other fighter be it 2d or 3d i usually take a match or two to discover some moves and then expand from there. However with street fighter i cant fiquare out anything bar the 6 basic moves, and am lucky to land a 2 hit combo let alone anything bigger. But unlike other fighting games im actually winning quite alot just by blocking and timing individual hits.
Is this how street fighter plays? Or have i just got it all wrong?
Can't seem to get into street fighter.

That's how it plays for the most part. That's why I like it.
Mostly harmless

Ah cool. I guess i'd just gotten the wrong idea from the vs games where its all about seeing the opening and unleashing the combo from hell.

back in the mid 2000s my friends and i were HUGE mortal kombat trilogy fans. we played the piss out of that game. sometimes my buddy and i got into these heated matches spanning close to 150 battles. and like you said, the game was easy for beginners to pick up and play.
about a year ago i bought capcom vs snk thinking i would get back into fighters. but holy shit, the moves are ridiculous. even to pull off the most basic move or combo you need to memorize these absurd button combinations. i played it for probably 10 minutes and haven't touched it since then. i know exactly how you feel.

The funny thing here is that Mortal Kombat Trilogy is FAR heavier on the whole memorizing button combinations thing than Capcom vs SNK. Its more the notation that Capcom/SNK/etc fighters use that makes the move executions seem so daunting and confusing than the actual movements themselves. Once you understand the basic stuff like QCF and whatnot you'll find that its actually not that confusing at all to remember, at least compared to MKT's dial-a-combos.
Re: Can't seem to get into street fighter.
There are some interesting combos that can be performed in the Street Fighter games, though they can be difficult at first to get the hang of. I've always felt that the SF games are good for short combos even for beginners. Try following a couple of light hits with a medium and see if they tack together well.
I find the timing individual hits is found more in titles like World Heroes, which I'm a fan of. It feels as if it requires a different mind set, because instead of focusing on combos I'm solely focused on punishing my opponent with a single move and then getting away, and I pay a lot more attention to chipping.

I could not agree more. Once you get the hang of the few different styles on Street Fighter, the same basic rules and everything apply to the rest of the characters.
Other games like Mortal Kombat, while still being fun, have retarded commands to memorize and there is no real formula to follow when designing a characters move set. Everything appears to be random and not really flow very well, and not to mention you have to memorize like 20 buttons to do most of the fatalities. You can't even do huge combos in Mortal Kombat either unless you play Noob Saibot, or if you count mashing High Punch nonstop and hitting someone in the face 8 times in a row "a combo".

Well I would make a defense for Mortal Kombat II at least having much more flowing (and all around fun) gameplay than its successors. I'd easily put MKII on a top 10 list for fighters.

Really? Check out some UMK3 combo videos on YouTube before saying something like that.
