That group you described (Westboro Baptist Church) has actually been barred from protesting in many places. George Bush passed a law that made it illegal to protest within a certain range of military funerals. The difference is that this group actively protests, yells and screams at people during a funeral. Nowhere have I heard anyone suggest that the muslims in this "mosque", 3 blocks from the world trade center, are going to be picketing and telling people viewing the memorial that they're glad people died in 9/11. There is a difference between a group intending to hurt and a group hurting because of oversensitivity.

I must have been unclear with what I said. My main point is that, in some places this ban against the church protests is being overturned because it infringes on their freedom of speech. Their rights are being protected even though I disagree with it. The right to build this mosque on privately owned property and for Muslims to worship there should also be upheld because of the right to freedom of religion even if many people disagree with it. Not sure if that clears up what I meant to say, I know I tend to babble in my posts.

I did just read another article (CNN unfortunately) that quotes one representative saying that this mosque should not be built in NY. That's a little absurd since there are already mosques in NY.

No I got what you were saying. I just thought your comparison actually kind of worked against what you were trying to say on the surface, since in many situations there have been moves to limit what the westboro baptist church can do. I was just explaining how the westboro baptist church is not the same as building the mosque.

I agree with you there. I had just read the article about the Missouri judge removing the ban and got a little heated .

I think that the majority of people believe that they have a legal right to build it there, but would rather that they build it somewhere else.

On a semi-related note. I was listening to the radio the other day and someone was commenting on the fact that at at least 2 locations in NYC, they close down some streets on Friday afternoon so that Muslims can lay out their prayer rugs and pray toward Mecca. There is apparently not enough room for all of them inside the mosques so they have to move outside.

Somehow this is okay, but if someone wants to put up a manger scene around Christmas or display the 10 commandments there is a major hissy fit thrown.

All this media and extra attention to this mosque could all have been avoided if they just opened a Taco Bell/Long John Silver's/Mosque near ground zero.

It would bring us all together knowing that although a mosque is there, so is a place where you can get a shrimp platter covered in nacho cheese and fire sauce.

I should run for President. Actually, Obama is really the only one that pisses me off about the mosque. Take a stand and show some balls. Same problem with the past few Presidents: NO leadership, all rhetoric (assuming Bush can pronounce the word rhetoric). Colin Powell would have made an ideal President, but he's too smart to run. I doubt I'll see a true leader as a President in my lifetime, but I have... Oh dear. All I have is h-o-p-e. That shit isn't working now.

Funny considering I see 10 commandments and manger scenes displayed around all over the place and nobody complains at all. I'd almost say that you seem to be implying that Christianity is the only religion that should be acceptable to practice in public.
