These new fighting games (is it just me?)
Re: These new fighting games (is it just me?)
I'm not terribly bothered by the games just being in 3d, it's other problems that are somewhat related though. I HATE that during certain moves SF changes the camera angle around, and the facial expressions are just god awful. I know it was never a realistic game or anything, but there's just to many cartoony touches in 4 for my taste.
Re: These new fighting games (is it just me?)
Sadly, the whole move to 3D is apparently a big reason that we won't be seeing a new Darkstalkers anytime soon. Most of the cast of Darkstalkers had moves that were only possible in 2D, because each frame could be something entirely different. Transformations, deformations and more were possible because of this.
Capcom recently said that they weren't able to put Demitri in MvC3 because of his transformations, such as Midnight Bliss. Anyone who has played Darkstalkers knows that Demitri is one of the least off-the-wall characters - if he's impossible, then so is Donovan, Jedah, Raptor, Huitzil, Pyron and many others.
Which, of course, goes back to what I said as soon as I saw Street Fighter IV - going 3D was a huge mistake. You flat-out aren't going to be able to do the same stuff in 3D that you could in 2D. Just going from SF4 after playing SF3 is an eye-sore.
At least KOF is still in 2D. I'm really looking forward to KOFXIII.

Street Fighter IV is not a 3D fighting game. It uses 3D sprites but the game is still mostly set on a 2D fighting plane.
Virtua Fighter, Tekken, Soul Calibur, Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance... those are 3D fighting games.
By the way, doesn't this thread belong in the "Fighters" section?

He's not talking about the gameplay, he's talking about the look.Weekend_Warrior wrote:Street Fighter IV is not a 3D fighting game. It uses 3D sprites but the game is still mostly set on a 2D fighting plane.
And I agree with him. Sprites may take more work to make than models (Let's be real, that's the ONLY reason Capcom abandoned sprites that are greater than 8-bit), but if the gameplay is 2D, then sprites > models every friggin' time.

They should have made SF IV like blazblue.. 2d hand drawn sprites with somewhat 3d backgrounds.. Or they could have made the game a more cell shaded experience similar to something like Auto Modellista, Valkyria Chronicles or Klonoa... And please for the love of god bring parrying back!!!the7k wrote: Which, of course, goes back to what I said as soon as I saw Street Fighter IV - going 3D was a huge mistake. I also looked at the recent Tier list on eventhubs and Makoto is dead freaking last and it's not even close... EVEN WORSE THAN DAN!! She by far the lowest tier character... And guess who's tops? Chun-Li, like she goes from being a beast in 3rd Strike and now is top tier in SSFIV.. Basically all the vanilla characters are tops and all the new guys(even Juri) are bottom and sucks.. I am especially upset that Makoto is so freaking bad since she was my main in 3rd Strike..

It's not just you. I honestly don't play many fighting games but I don't like the look of Street Fighter IV. BlazBlue looks good with the hand drawn sprites and I think that's what Street Fighter IV and other games using 3D rendering/modeling are missing.
Re: These new fighting games (is it just me?)
I was really judgmental of SFIV being 3D, then I played it, while it doesnt hold a candle to SFIII, its still a solid engine.
If it means that much too you, stick to KOF.
