Sonic Jam For Sega Saturn Review

Post by ReddMcKnight »

Back in July, 1997, Sonic Jam was released for the Sega Saturn. This was a really neat compilation game containing Sonic 1, Sonic 2, Sonic 3, and Sonic & Knuckles, and it also let you play Sonic & Knuckles with Sonic 1, 2, or 3 plugged into it. It also included many extra features, including a full 3D Mini-Game thing called Sonic World. Anyway, here's why this game rocks:

Gameplay: Must I explain this? Everyone has played Sonic 1 before...Oh, alright. Heh. All 4 of the Sonic Games are Platformers. You go Left or Right, jumping on top of enemies, and using various techniques to reach the end of the level. These include Spin-Dashing, Flying, and Gliding. You basically have to do whatever you can to reach the end of the level.

Music: Ah, Sega and it's composers. Sonic Music is absolutely fantastic. Each game features a bunch of great tracks, ranging from Rock to Pop. My personal favorite is the Ending Theme from Sonic 2. Fun Fact: The Ending Theme from Sonic 2 is actually an instrumental of a J-Pop Song called "Sweet Dream".

Graphics: The graphics in each game are colorful and bright. No matter what level your on, you'll see a bright color somewhere.

The Extra Stuff: This compilation includes some neat features, such as an Easy Mode and a Disable Timer feature for each game. I assume this was implemented for newer players, as when you play Easy Mode, some levels are missing completely. Still, it's pretty fun. There's also Sonic World, a 3D Mini-Game where you can accept challenges, such as collecting rings in a certain time. Not only that, there are buildings in Sonic World that feature Art, Music, classic TV Commercials, and more.

The Result: This game is an absolute must have for Sega Saturn owners. Why it got such bad reviews, I will NEVER know...Why are you still reading this?! Get over to eBay and find this game! Do it! Do it NOW!! :D

Score: 9.5/10

Fun Facts about Sonic Jam:

-It was also released on the Game.com. Guess how well that turned out.

-The Sonic World Mini-Game was the basis for Sonic Adventure.

Why didn't you mention that this compilation allows you to spin dash in Sonic 1?

Hey Redd - I've enjoyed some of your reviews, but there's really nothing here that I can't get from the Wikipedia article about the game. What can you tell us about the differences in sound/look/feel between the Genesis and Saturn versions? What, if anything, is interesting about the unlockables? I recently picked this game up and have decided to part with it - any good reason not to?

there are some level differences with the saturn version.

when you play a game on the saturn, you get easy, normal, or original.

if you play original you will get the same game as the genesis.

when you play normal, there are less pits, spikes and other obstacles.

if you play easy you will play one less level, and the gameplay is shortened.

from what I've noticed there is also some minor differences with sound.
