GBC: nothing on the screen!

I found a GBC for $2 over the weekend. Popped a game in when I got home and got the familiar GB bootup chime. But the screen never came on. So... what do you think? Something easy to fix, or garbage?

Maybe check for something unplugged or gummed up with crap inside where the screen connects?

If nothing else works, don't throw the thing away, keep the shell and buttons in case you need them for something else. I know you could buy the shells from China, but this way you have a first party shell.
